south of hills, north of plain...
Woke up Saturday morning to high winds. Walked out on back porch of cabin, gave the owl hoot and nothing. Walked down to the gate and hooted, nothing. Feeling like crap so decided to get right back in bed. Woke up about 9:30 cleaned the camp and headed out. Reached the gate and as I was locking her down saw 3 gobblers about 250 yards away easing up the gas line. I watched from the truck and they eventually turned down a logging road. I knew where they were going but cutting them off would be next to impossible. I moved as quickly as I could and set up and as soon as I squatted down there they were about 200 yds. I yelped and two peeled off in my direction. I was in a bad spot for cover but this was my last chance and I was going to ride it out. They got about 80 yds away and must have known something wasn't right. They turned and ran back up the hill from where they came. DANG! As I was about to give it up the 3rd gobbler came out in full strutt and cut them off. He literally drove them back down the hill towards me. So here we go! They get within 60 yards and turn into the woods. I clucked and purred and knew they would pop out right on top of me and sure enough one shows itself about 20 yards in. I'm trying to find a time to spin and get a shot and out of nowhere a dang rat snake (didn't know it was rat at the moment) slithers right between my feet. I can feel him against my legs and arse and of course I flinch and the bird gets nervous and eased off. I kick the snake and as I do I could hear the other two birds purring right below me on the hill. (20 yrds but out of sight). I jump up and put it in the back as he's trying to get airborne. Had to leave by noon and shot him at 11:49 for the last hunt of the year. I could have done without the snake but what a rush to end it like that.

Good story and a heck of a rope on a bird

Man, that's a 4th quarter come-from-behind win.

Congrats on the last minute bird. Looks like you hammered him pretty good too for a body shot

Wow what a hunt. If that snake had messed up the hunt I may have shot everyone I saw for a couple years
