So I have a family member that his eye sight is failing. He can still see to drive and work but has problems with seeing smaller things like crosshairs and has to get the BOLD posts to see in the scope well. He has Macular Degeneration. He knows I frequent this sight so he wanted me to ask. He is looking for a sight to put on his AR that he can use. He can't see thru the iron sight peep holes. Now he does shoot a 30/30 and a 22 with iron sights. But I don't really know of any other iron sights that arent designed like the magpuls. He doesn't want a traditional scope on his gun. I told him he could look at an holographic type sight or a red dot. He wants to get a census from guys that have poor vision and still shoot. I also suggested an1-4x24 scope as well. What say ye?!

The low power range Leupolds with heavy duplex are a good choice. Also a Leupold VX-R 1-4 with duplex or #4 reticle would work. Go to a store with a good selection and test drive them.

I shoot a Leupold scope with a Heavy duplex reticle. It has very bold lines almost all the way to the center.

1-4x24 trijicon with the post would probably be the best but.....they are pricey

This^^.

Last year I had another AR built and I put a VX Hog on it with the fire dot. I love it. I'll never go back to a standard scope.

Leupold vxr 1-4 or a vortex crossfire 1-4 with illuminated dot will work great.

Ditto on that P-223, I really like mine too. But the cross hairs are nothing special.

I put a bushnell ar optics 1-4x24 on mine, not the illuminated one. I can't do red dots with my eyes, they starburst.

Lots of good advice here.

There are plenty of options on the market now for optics period.

The last one I bought was a Micro Red Dot made by Primary Arms. They have the same basic specs as the Aimpoint T1/H1 but only set you back $180.

I'm pleased with it so far

He doesn't want typical scope. So I think the Nikon 223 is out. The lower power scopes or the eotech type or red dot is what he is interested in. BUT he doesn't want to buy then find out he can't see it. So he was trying to get feedback from other people with similar situations that worked best for them.

I have a Millett DMS-1 with a circle dot reticle listed in the classifieds... The center dot is illuminated. It's a lower power 1-4 and comes with a base...I'll make him a smokin' deal on it

I'm in the same boat.

I like the projection ones because you can see everything around you while shooting. Reflex sight.

I have one made by Mueller that had 600 rounds of full power buckshot run through the 3" 12 ga, another 150 or so through the 3.5" 12 ga and still worked perfectly. I finally dropped it on the concrete walk chasing a big bobcat through a marina on foot in the dark. The shotgun and myself landed squarely on top of the optic with the shotgun upside down. It still looked fine but lost its zero. Called em up, told em what happened and they sent me another one after I sent mine back to them. No charge.

It's about to go on my turkey gun.

Always wondered about Mueller quality. That's speaks volumes. Great customer service too!

And almost reasonably priced.

Long time lurker, first time poster. Y'all should check out the Atibal XP8. It's a 1-8 scope with a heavy lighted reticle for less than $350. I really wonder how someone with failing eyesight will do with an unmagnified optic, it may be extremely hard for them to focus on the sights and the target at the same time. With something like this you get the best of both worlds with a lighted reticle and 1x up close and also 8x zoom for longer shots. Here's a link to it at Optics Planet. http://www.opticsplanet.com/atibal-xp8-1...second-foc.html

The VXR scopes will adjust in brightness from a barely visible dot in pitch black, to bright enough to use in full sun light.

The 1x4 illuminated scopes essentially take the place of a red dot and a scope. I feel like they give you the widest range of usefulness.

I looked at several scopes before I picked the VXR. I didn't care for the Vortex Strike Eagle and although the trijicon looked nice, it didn't impress me for the price. The Leupold has a 30mm tube and is very bright with a crisp sight picture. Although I don't hog hunt, the Pig Plex suits my needs for this particular rifle. I've shot targets from nearly point blank to 250 yards and have been very happy.

I have an EoTech halo sight with a flip over mounted 3X magnifier behind it. EoTech by itself is an awesome close in/running target sight that is good out to 100 yards. Further than that I flip the 3X magnifier over. That gets me out to 300+ yards. I really like the set up. Cowitnessing flip up BUIS is a breeze too.
