never had one scored.
If I killed the new worlds record tomorrow morning I'd take a bunch of pics, call Joel Stone to arrange mounting it, and put the antlers in my trophy room. No score, no internet pics, no nothing. EVER. X1000! Everyone that I know who has killed a really good deer 170+ in state, their lives have been negativity impacted by the kill. The pack mentality to discredit the hunter starts soon as pics hit social media. The free range pen thread is a prime example of what happens even when the kill is legitimate. Personally, I've never been blessed with the opportunity to kill such an animal, but if it ever happens none of y'all will ever know about it.

Never even mounted one. Before cell phone cameras really never took pictures much either after the first couple Figured I'd run out of wall space if I ever started. I'd shoot a bigger one and so on we'd go.
Think I'm gonna mount the next Mule Deer. It's not like you shoot one of those every season. No place to put an Elk. Be breathing down your neck if you were sitting on the couch.

Personally, I've never been blessed with the opportunity to kill such an animal, but if it ever happens none of y'all will ever know about it. See, I just don't get that.....I mean, if I killed a monster I'd certainly brag about it a little, at least to my friends and I'm sure I'd post the pic/story on here. But as far as my life being "negatively impacted" by people trying to discredit it, I just don't get it. I'd post what/how (and maybe a really vague reference as to "where") it happened and if people wanted to discredit me, then whatever. I really wouldn't care if they believed me or not. Of course, the only thing I could see them trying to "discredit" would be the free range vs high fence issue. And if I killed one in a fence, I wouldn't try to hide it. I don't see that ever being an issue though because A) I'm too cheap to pay what that would cost and B) it simply doesn't interest me even if I could afford it. But if I killed one free range and someone didn't believe me, then that's on them and I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

I couldn't care less about these boys killing those studs on Bankhead. Me going up there would be the ultimate needle in a haystack ordeal. Here's the difference: you're logical and reasonable about it. You know if you shot Big DingleBuck that there are not five more AlmostBig DingleBuck clones running around the same area. But some people will flip out and tell you "that buck's jeans are everywheres in there!" and will try to go find another one. And so what made that buck's area great for it to be living in, grow old/big in, etc., will be probably ruined for a while because of morons who think they can, as mentioned above, ride your coattails. I'm finally learning that "Loose lips sink ships" when it comes to deer hunting. There are far too many lazy and/or jealous hunters out there that don't understand or care what it takes for a person to regularly kill good deer, especially on public land.
When it comes to deer hunting, your so called friends and even your family members will try to ride your coat-tail to success ......so a stranger wont think twice about it.

The free range vs fair chase is easy enough to defend but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Your also going to be accused of shooting it at night, over bait, over the property line or poached from someone else's ground. If you bow kill it someone is going to accuse you of shooting it with a firearm. I could go on and on. How about having to tell your story to dcnr because of "accusations" only to have to tell them again 2 months later to see if your story changed. Hell, I know somebody who lost their whole lease and another their club membership after killing a "book" deer. It sounds preposterous but it's a reality when it comes to big deer. It's a damn shame but I've seen it over and over.

Gomer just hasn't been there and therefore knows not of what he speaks...yeah boy wait till the GWs show up asking questions about your deer based on what some sumbitch that lives 100 miles from you said about you. Shot at night, over corn, in the state park, out the girlfriends bedroom window at night over a feeder, etc, etc, etc. Or just lose yer lease, permit, etc, etc, etc.
If you kill a HUGE deer do not move it, call a surveyor and a GW to come to the spot, call Six on yer side early, call a lawyer too. LOL

I guess I'm just really naive about the whole thing. I just don't see it being a huge deal. I really don't care what a bunch of folks that I don't even know think about it, if I know it was killed legally and ethically. If they don't believe me, that's on them. As far as telling your story to DCNR a few months later, it seems like if you tell the truth to begin with, then [re]telling the truth a couple of months later shouldn't be a big deal.
And to Fred's comments, how can they revoke your hunting permit just because someone that doesn't know you made up a rumor that the deer was killed illegally, if they have 0 proof of such?
I wasn't intending to argue with you, so don't take it that way. All I'm saying is if I somehow manage to kill a free range 170" deer, I'm gonna take a victory lap or 2.

Either this fellow is just not a happy person or he knows the miserable questioning of the Big Giant Deer he just killed and is dreading it... You couldn't wipe the smile off my face for the rest of my season if I was to get One like that one!

Bhamfred is 100% right. If Im not mistaken I talked to him on the phone years ago and he gave me great advice but it was too late at the time but I have dang sure have followed it ever since. Showing of big deer is overrated and thats all I will say on this subject it brings up way too many bad memories. It shouldn't be that way but that's the reality of it.
