Thinking about getting my dad one for Christmas. I've been looking at the Parrot Bebop 2 kit with the VR goggles. It's got a little over 1 mile range. His breathing and age really caught up with him so I think this would be a good way for him to get out and explore the farm a little while sitting on the back porch. I don't know really anything about them so any input would be great. My biggest need is range, I want him to be able to sit on he porch and explore a good distance.
Finally deported myself from the peoples republik of Kaliforkistan.
I have 2, I bought a nice one first and realized I was gonna break it trying to learn how to fly it, so I bought a cheaper smaller one to learn on first and that made a big difference. Now that I've practiced on the cheaper one the more expensive ones are a lot easier.

I have several. Here is a tip. If you are going to drop 500 on a nice drone, then go ahead and get 2 or 3 sub $30 practice drone to learn how how they function and to practice with. Think of them like cars. Learn to drive on a cheap model before you go for something that you will really regret getting stuck in a tree or crashing.
It's the parrot 2 FPV has range 1.24 miles. Drone with controller and vr goggles on sale $499.
I had thought about buying him a cheap one as well to practice with before moving to the more expensive one. Budget, $1000-1500 or so.
With that budget you have a lot of options. I'd go for the DJI Phantom 4 if you want to max out your budget. It's the newest best technology drone out there now for general public use. DJI did just put their Phantom 3's on sale for $399 though and it's a deal at that price for all the features you get.
Watch this. It will give you a good comparison and give you an idea of their capability.
I have DJI Phantom 3 Standard. $499 new. Over half mile range. 25 minute battery life. 12mp camera. Shots 2.7K video(My iPhone will only handle 1080p so you can adjust settings). When you let go of controls it stays steady with the gps turned on. the wind will not blow off course due to gps. Also has a return to home function if you lose sight of it or get disoriented flying from you phone.
we got an mjx for $50 last year. its a pretty big drone last 12 minutes. has self homing and headless. I wanted one without a camera first to learn with and that uses cheap batteries $7. There are some generic models like the mjx that give you more for you money. I order off ebay from china. at least 3 times the drones never got sent and I had to file a claim. but there are some deals on there. I like the Cheerson mini drones you can get them for $15 and fly them in the house for training. they also fly pretty fast outside for one the size of a silver dollar. If your looking for a real bargain, do a search on "best budget drones"
I don't no nothing about drones myself, but my son ask for one for Christmas. But he's only 10 years old.Men and my wife went to tractor supply, in clanton to get him a small game trap for coon,s and squirrel,s.and we were looking at there toy,s and she found a drone there. It was 100.00 looked nice,it said on the box it took pictures , and had a remote control with a screen on it I guess to see were it was located. Was about the size of a car,s s turn wheel.looked cool, they also had a smaller one for 39.00 I thought the bigger one was a great buy.
My first "drone" (back when everyone still called them quadcopters) was a Hubsan X4. It is super tiny, but dang that thing could book it. I learned with that, and it worked great. I would still fly it, but a hawk took it out one day and I've never put new motors in it.

Where did you see it for $399? The website says $499. If I am looking at the correct thing.

It must have been a black friday or cyber monday deal. They had them on their website and on Amazon at that price, and now both are back at $499
DJI is the standard for all us normal folks, buy with confidence! Batteries are not cheap, sets of replacement propellers are....get a hard case for all of it and have fun!
