Baton Rouge/ Beat 10
So I live in Baton Rouge but my mothers family is all from west Jefferson, walker county area. My dad's family is all from upstate New York. I talk to my family in upstate New York every couple months and visit them every couple of years. So I do not have tons of contact with them. Anyway, Friday I'm at work making a round in the plant, I notice my dad is calling and he knew I was at work. I answer and he tells me my grandmother in New York got a call from someone saying it was me, and that I was in jail, and had a broken nose from a car wreck. Whoever it was told my grandmother to go buy $2000 worth of gift cards to pay off the insurance for the wreck. AND SHE DOES IT! She goes to cvs 20 miles from her house (she lives in the Adirondacks so she has to drive a ways to the store). Manager stops her from buying the cards and tells her it is a scam. She gets home and whoever it is asks her if she got the cards she said yes but asked them personal questions only I could answer. Finally they hung up. I have know idea who It could have been. I do not talk about my family in New York to much so I don't think it was someone I knew. It was either someone she knew that she talked to about me or my crackhead uncle from Alabama somehow got her number. My mom thinks it was identity theft but it was to personal for that. My hunch is it was my uncle, he found the number at my grandparents in Alabama, from when my parents traveled up there and gave my moms parents the number in case they needed to get in touch. Anyway be on the lookout, this was a good scam to prey on the heart strings of the elderly.

The elderly fall victim to scams everyday. It takes a low lifed bastard to do something like that. I hope the POLICE were called.
I think you are right , they had a lot of insider info. Thats terrible. Glad the CVS manager was a good person and protected her !!!!

Yea she called the state police but they couldn't do anything cause there was not a crime, and she could not find the number on caller id.

This scam has been around for a while, but older folks who don't use the internet/Facebook/etc. won't know about it.

I despise thieves, but I despise scum who prey on the elderly even more! mad

Easiest targets are names ending with Jr. And Sr.
Years ago, my grandmother received one of those calls, my dad was in jail in Florida. Luckily she called me and I told her not to send anything.

Several years ago this type scam was around using e-mails. A couple of my friends called wanting to know how much money I needed as I was suppose to be in England, in a hospital, and needing money.

My wifes aunt had the same type thing happen. The caller said it was my wifes sister and that she was off in another country on a trip and had a wreck and was going to be put in jail if she didn't come up with X thousand $ in cash. Her aunt almost fell for it but had the sense to text my wife and ask if her sister was out of the country. She does travel out of the country fairly often.

I think these people skim information about their targets and the "wreck victims" from Facebook or something. The one with my wifes aunt knew family names and all that sort of crap.

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

There are tons of websites that list dozens of people related to you and connected to you in any way. Just google your name and you can get all kinds of info. I don't facebook or any other sites but here really and all my family are listed with addresses and ages and all sorts of info.
