Good evening---

I will be a first time bow hunter this weekend and am curious if I can carry a rifle with me since it is only bow season?
I do not imagine you can, but what about even keeping it in the truck?

Also, once bow season starts, can you hunt pigs with a rifle or is it strictly bows until gun season starts?

Thanks

I'm under the impression you can hunt coyotes or hogs or groundhogs or crows with a rifle anytime but you can't carry it with you bowhunting. You can carry a handgun (especially if you have a CCW permit). Once either sex gun season comes in you can carry bow and rifle. But I haven't read regs closely in awhile. You might want to read them yourself. I plan to carry my .22 pistol with me.

All I have is a bow and have hogs on my land. But I'll only take bow. I wouldn't advise taking a rifle.

My common sense tell me you cant carry rifle in the wood with you until gun season starts.

I am uncertain about if you can have it in the vehicle with you or not--i would think you can as long as it is unloaded and in a case.

I am also uncertain about hunting pigs with a rifle during bow season. The reason for my confusion is that you can legally hunt them up until Saturday with a rifle. For example, i know you can not hunt deer until opening day, but you can hunt pigs before---so who is to say you arent hunting deer and "claim" to be hunting pigs.

I for one dont believe in doing that, but want to know the rule because we have a lot of pigs on property and want to kill everyone i can.

Thank you in advance for helping answer my questions.

If it's in a case I'd think you're ok. Just shoot the pigs with a bow. It's not worth the risk I only to get caught with a rifle. A lot of times also if pigs come in and you shoot one with a bow they will come back.

Why not just call the DCNR at 334-242-3467 Thursday, ask for Law Enforcement and then get it straight from them?

Don't assume. Find out.

Did you know you can kill a hog with a bow ? If you are in a club it may be wise to ask them. Bowseason is wonderful because deer walk free before the blasting starts. I wouldn't ruin that.

Yes, I am aware that bows can be used to harvest many animals including hogs, I will certainly attempt to take one if I can.

However, there are some shots that might be available during the day at distances greater than what i am comfortable taking with a bow.

Thank you Clem, I will call DCNR later today and ask.

As far as being a Hillary fan, I am not.

Ac870 is correct they passed a law you can carry a pistol to protect youself from preditior,s. only. You can not make a cripleing shot on a deer with a bow, then n find the deer still alive and finish it off with the pistol. They are for hogs and coyote,s and such.

As far as keeping it in the truck you can. You can ride around all year long with a loaded rifle or shotgun in your vehicle, except for on WMAs

I do not currently bow hunt and wouldn't plan on doing this but a simple question I want to propose.

If someone is predator hunting(coyote/bobcat) during bow only season with a dedicated varmint gun something like a .17Rem or .204 with varmint bullets would they have trouble?
They have a coyote caller going and it is clear that they're not deer hunting.

Why would that be any different than squirrel hunting during bow season?
