Dr. Lyle Cain at Andrews Clinic there at St. Vincent's.
He won't put in an "off the shelf" replacement.
He will have a replacement made from the measurements of your actual knee.
He did both knees for our Pastor's wife and she is doing great.
He scoped mine back in 2013.
No problems.

My uncle had both knees done and told the nurse during his rehab that it was worse that childbirth. She asked him how could he possibly know that. He looked at her and said if it wasn't there would be a hell of a lot less people than there are.

So with the associated rehab, what sorta kinda time frame are we looking at to just get to walking again without a cane?
With my last surgery, I went to 4 weeks worth of rehab, went back to Dr for recheck due to it still hurting like a mother,Dr said I just needed more rehab, went back to rehab another 3 weeks, that made no difference in mobility or lessening of the pain, called Dr to say I still have problems. She said go back and do more rehab and I explained to her that I had to go back to work at that point. I did go back for a third round of rehab ( 2 weeks worth) but it made no difference whatsoever! Now I have a limp and that knee constantly hurts and will buckle on me in a New York minute. I gotta get it fixed!

Rehab ain't fun but it's critical. Walker for a week or 2, then cane for a few weeks. I could drive after 4-5 weeks and then I was back on the tractor. Can still be a little stiff if I overdo it, but not as bad as the other that hasn't been replaced yet. Soon as I'm ready to go through the process again, I'll do the other one. I'm 69

One of the best at joint replacement in Birmingham is Mark Ellis. My wife Susan has work with him and his late father around forty years. He has a one doctor practice and always sees his own patients. He is fellowship trained and a heck of a nice guy.

John,
I wish you good luck and a speedy recovery.
My mom had a double knee replacement several years ago.

N2 how long did her recovery take ? Honestly, it's been so long that I don't remember. I'll ask her and get back with you.

I had it in 2012 and recovery was slow as hell but similar results as Ronfromramer. It was still VERY weak for a couple years and would buckle in a skinny minute. It aint buckled in probably 1 1/2 years but is sore a lot. Any change in temps or pressure causes aching pain. I was 42 at the time of surgery.
honestly hunting all these steep draws and ridges has helped tremendously, though I suppose if you did it too soon you may cause permanent damage.

Update; Ok,I called Andrews sports meds this am, told them I wanted a consult Dr Cain about a possible knee replacement. They referred me to talk with Dr David Moore who is in the same practice and that is his specialty, along with hip replacements. Sooo, I have an appointment with them November 4th . That's the quickest they could get me in. Thanks again for all the replies and thoughts and well wishes. I'll keep you posted on everything.

Anything related to knees in the Bham area, I would atleast look into Lyle Cain. Lyle Cain replaced my knee (TKR) in February of this year. Nothing but great things to say about him. I am a competitive powerlifter and most of the doctors I've talked to just scoffed and said I should just quit. I wanted to confer with a doctor that had a background in treating athletes so I did my homework and found him. Lyle is the Crimson Tide knee doctor and like Bama or not, he has that position for a damned good reason. It was painful. Very painful. The first two months you can expect this: The only concern you will have is managing the pain. Sorry but it's the truth. My wife paid the bills, did the housework and yard work, took care of everything for me and I am blessed to have her. That said, I'm 8 months out and I'm more active than I ever dreamed. I've been lame for 8 years and now I'm hiking 1000 ft up mountain ridges with little pain or instability at all. Walking down stairs now is not a huge problem and its getting better every month. Dr. Cain didn't just tell me to quit powerlifting like the others did. He gave me limits on my lifting that were based on experience. He has limited my squat to a weight that insures I'll never squat competitively again. He has limited my deadlift to a weight that will easily allow me to continue competing. I just can't deadlift any appreciable weight until the first year has passed. Bench press is the same, it's not going to be a problem as the new knee will provide ample support. Just bust your butt doing the PT and keep doing it after you no longer visit the therapist. I cannot emphasize this more, it is key for your long term hunting success. I know you like to do the hillbilly hunting and carry that danged climber up high on Skyline so if you want to be able to continue that you are gonna have to invest your heart, blood, sweat, and tears into PT ... A big investment in the short term, but a light investment long term. Good luck brother, PM me for a phone number if you wanna talk about it.
I don't want to pass quietly into the night. I want to slide in sideways kickin and screamin Life really is awesome ... Soak it up while you can ...
