I'm researching this 338 for some out of state hunting. Anyone have experience with one or recommendations for other 338 Win Mags?

What would the recoil be like in that rifle?

I've shot a .338 in a Montana at the recoil is significant.

I've got a Montana in a .325 and to me the .325 is worse.

Keep in mind, this shouldn't be used as a plinking rifle. They are built as a working rifle and if used this way, the recoil shouldn't be an issue.

Just curious, what are your plans for this gun?

I plan on using it for Bear, Moose and whatever else craws or walks in Alaska..and for Elk in Wyoming. I've heard different stories on the recoil. Some say not bad and others it hurts..ha

For sure it will not be a plinking or day on the bench gun. I know its seems hard to find one. I've held several Montana's in BHM, HSV and Montgomery, but not in a 338 cal. I've got a couple of shops looking for me one now.

I saw one on 24hour last week.

Seems like he was asking $900.

The .338 Win Mag is probably the best all around caliber for North America.

Just to throw this out there,

The Kimber TalKeetna is basically a Montana in 375 H&H with a Krieger barrel.

Thanks for the information and the lead on a rifle. One of the shops helping me said the 2016 models may not be out yet, but they have only added a threaded muzzle, so a used one or earlier year new one will work for me.

Only experience with a .338 is a stainless browning about. I liked it a lot and would probably choose that caliber if I needed more than a 30-06.

Recoil is stiff, but if you want an Alaska rifle stick with .338 Win Mag assuming you don't reload. You can always put a brake on it but in a hunting situation you won't shoot it several times in a row, or let's assume you won't. There are obviously others, but that caliber will do anything you need it to do and do it well. That's what it has going for it.

I found one in TN and it's on the way to my FFL. Gonna shave 4in off the 26in barrel and recrown, add a Leupold 36mm scope and give it go. Now I just need to find out what it likes to eat best.

I'd start with 225's.

Recoil with be a little less than the 250's and that's plenty of bullet for any NA game.

I have hunted with a 338 win mag for about 20 years. Its my go to gun. Its a as Remington custom shop gun and it handles great. About 8 1/2 lbs. Recoil can be sharp on the bench but you will never notice it in the woods.
