Anybody recommend a reasonable concrete guy? I want a concrete driveway. It's about 90 yards long so about 35 yards of concrete. Cost of concrete by our local supplier is $95 a yard. So about $3600 worth of concrete. Had one guy come out and wanted $6500 so nearly 3k of labor. It currently has a gravel drive so he said he would be pouring it straight on top after grading it. I asked about doing metal in it and he said he would do enough joints that it wouldn't need it.

It seems to me that nearly $3000 for grading the gravel, setting up forms, and finishing is kind of high. It's fairly level and looks like an easy job

I would recommend waiting till it cools off some, if poured right now it would set up really fast and likely crack.

I paid about that ($2.5k-$3k range) for labor for forming/finishing my 400 feet driveway, 10 feet wide, last year. came to a large pad at the top. No metal in it--I should have on done it on the pad, but the long driveway has been fine so far.

However, I didn't get other prices on labor. I paid for the concrete separate at an already agreed to per-yard price for basement/house/porches/garage/etc.

IF you do pour it now you can cover it way burlap cloth and keep some sprinkler on it. This is how my dad would cure out water brakes at the foot of a damn in mid summer heat. IT lets the concrete set up slower they would keep them on there for days sometime the engineers spec'ed the time out for it.

On much smaller scale, I had a 10x12 patio poured recently and the guy who did it told me give it a good watering 3x a day if possible for the first 7-10 days and that would help it set up slower. I did that although it probably wasn't that big of a deal on my patio being that there wont be any weight on it to speak of.

I have a firmly packed gravel drive that is 900 feet long. My estimate for concrete was $30,000. And this concrete man is a friend of mine! DANG!

I reckon I'll keep driving on dusty gravel.

Mully,

If you don't me asking what did that cost you? I have a coworker who is wanting to get a patio poured.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like maybe I should put this off until fall.

I might just drive down the road to some construction sites and see if I can hire the guys that do the work myself without the middle man.

Even at $6,500 your estimate is a good bit better per foot than what I got from a close friend who is in the concrete business.

I don't know how much of a friend that is. Tell him he better take you on a nice dinner if he's going to do that to you

BigDalk your estimate is not a bad one but it might get better this fall when work starts slowing down. This is the worse time of year for that because all the crews are WFO and they price things accordingly.

Vernon you need to get a quote for Asphalt. No way I would pour a driveway that long even if I had the money.

Labor
2 Finishers @ $25/hr (including burden) = $50
1 Chute / Forman @ $25 $25
2 Raker / Vibe $50
1 Pick up with tools/misc form supply $25
Cost $150 /hr
OH&P 30
Total $180 /hr
5 hrs to mobilize and grade
5 hrs to form & strip
8 hrs to pour, finish and cure
2 hrs to clean up and demob.

20 hrs x $180 = $3,600. Just a VERY rough estimate.

270'L x 10'W x 4"D = 2,700 sf = $ $1.33/sf
or $103/cy. I'd say that's not bad at all for labor and consumable materials.

edit - the formatting above didn't come out the same way I typed it in so it's kind of hard to read.

What he said. Typically as a rule of thumb, the finishing of the concrete will cost about the same as the cost of the concrete. 2+2=4

That seems to hold true in a lot of construction. Cost of materials = cost of labor

$2.00/sf is what we have been paying to grade form & pour concrete driveways & sidewalks. Concrete & wire mesh are not included in that price.

I would defiantly have wire mesh in it and control joints every 10'

I wish medicine was that way smile
Our last job was $94M:
It was $11M Labor & Burden, $15M in Materials, $26M in Subs, & $8M in Equipment/Fuel. $20M in Indirects. The rest was Risk, Contingency & OH&P. It all depends on the type job. A moveable bridge job might be 70% materials and a big grading job might be 80% labor & equipment. The risk is almost always in the labor, that's whay some people don't understand why the labor portion is so high.

Moose, I feel confident I overpaid a little but I was ready to have it done so I just used the guy who my buddies use that pour the driveways in my neighborhood. He is WFO right now and had to catch it between jobs but he charged me $700 to dig it out, form, pour, and finish. My neighbor did a 10x10 at the same time but he dug his out and hauled off his dirt and he charged him $500. I was more than glad to pay the extra $200 to not have to dig and wheel barrow that dirt out and haul it off.
