Yesterday a guy I work with walks up to me and tells me that he want's to sell his Marlin 17 HMR. He shows me a couple of pictures and says that 3 full boxes of ammo comes with it. Then he tells me that he will let me have it for $160. Without hesitation I tell him to bring it to me. Can't walk away from a deal like that. So now it resides in my gun safe. Only problem is that I don't know anything about this caliber. I've read a couple of reviews that were all good and I checked ballistics reports. I trust the guy I bought it from, but I respect the opinion of the experts here. What is the guns limits and advantages. What kind of distance can I expect to shoot. Any pros or cons would be helpful.

My experience is just what has already been stated here: from 100 yards and less...they are bad news. They shoot very well.
Out past 100 yards...it didn't do so well for me.
Just my .02

Its a bad dude inside 100 yards like other have said. It does not like the the wind at longer distances. I've killed at least 7 or 8 coyotes with it. I did make a 287 yard shot on one, hit him in the spine and broke him down long enough to get closer and finish him. I have a Marlin 917vls it shoots very well. Only complaint is the trigger sucks. You might see if Wolff springs offers a reduced trigger spring. I just ordered a 3 pack for Ruger M77s

DO NOT, shoot a squirrel anywhere but in the head if you plan on eating it.It will absolutely blow it in half!!

Thanks guy's. I shot it a few times this morning and I think it's going to be a lot of fun to shoot. Just need to get the scope adjusted. I'll keep that in mind about the squirrels.
