A friend's son just graduated from Auburn with a degree in chemical engineering and will be looking to enter the job market in north Alabama if possible. Y'all got any pointers on that job market up in this part of the state?

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Motor home with good ventilation, never stay in one place very long, burner phones, never use your own product.

Seriously, tough job market in nearly all fields...congratulations to him, and good luck!

I don't know about anything up that way but down here we have Farley Nuclear and they employ a fair amount of engineers.

It's a sanctuary.

ChemE is probably the best major. He'll have a much easier time finding work vs being a marketing major.

He won't have much problem finding a decent job. That is a strong degree, that afford him the opportunity to do nearly anything.

Got to be a sharp kid. I barely got through the 16 semester hrs. min. required. I cant imagine what it takes to get that degree.

My SIL graduated from AU with a chemical engineering degree 2 years ago. He was lucky, got a job in Stevenson at the WestRock paper mill. Prolly not going to be a lot of demand in NA . He may have to travel .

I am an AU Chem Eng class of 07. If he is ok with the Huntsville area he will be fine. Outside that area the jobs are fewer. I woukd tell him to open his area up if he truly wants a career job, something he can grow in and expand his possibilities. Open it up to 3 hours from North Bama. Probably buggest mistake I made was making my first job choice based on "going home". Just my .02

Paper mills employ lots of chemical engineers and they pay well too. There is the Westrock mill in Stevenson and the SCA mill in Florence.

I know a couple who work for DOD contractors. They are not in a related job but its just a piece of paper in the grand scheme of things. If someone needs to fill a spot and they like what the see to a lot of folks what type engineer don't matter.

I am not sure how serious 3M in Guin is but they have had a process engineer job posted for almost a year. I am not sure if that is as far north as he wants or not?I am a ME from AU class of 02 my room mate was a CE he works for Saint Gobain in Russeville now and seems to like it. He and I done the defense industry thing for years and he finally got out of it for a production job. I am still grinding it out in the defense industry and I personally would not recommend it for a new grad as its volatile and the new guys are usually the the first ones to go when things get slow, which can make it difficult to build experience. I was fortunate and got in at a decent time and had a good mentor but that seems harder to find these days.

257 nailed it with the north Alabama jobs. Houston is where he ought to go for a few years experience then he could go where ever he wanted. And starting pay is good money. Refineries, plastic manufacturers, ect.

Some good advice so far. He'll most likely have to be flexible on location to get into really good money, but should be into 6 figures in just a few years with that degree (if he knows how to work). Wherever he goes, he needs to keep cost of living in mind.

I've got a couple of good friends with Chem E degrees that are doing very well at Farley Nuclear near Dothan.
