Have y'all killed them all yet? Tomorrow will be my first hunt of the year. Sure hope I hear some gobble! I found some birds out there last year, but they never gobbled worth a piss.

Wait until the fire burns through and then set up and call! Seriously, the birds are very vocal in some areas just very hard to kill. I never did kill one in all my time down there but got real close several times.

Don't let a good fire stop you. They'll be picking up blackened grasshoppers before the smoke settled.

Didn't get to go today, got called in to work. I'll be there rain, smoke, fire, or shine. All I've ever read and learned was about how good controlled burns, or back in the day before smokey the bear, uncontrolled burns actually benefitted turkey and quail. I've never killed a bird on smoldering ground, but came very close once.

I learned a long time back - if you're hunting recently burned land, you need to be super early so they don't see you walkin in, bring a ground blind, build a ground blind, cut a limb and put over you, or something...because you can see for days through those burns! And you gonna have black charcoal and chit alllll over you too. Just a heads up bro!

Good luck

They're still grouped up down here. Some people are hearing 4or 5 from one place. Others aren't hearing anything or very little. Been here since Monday and staying til Wednesday. Only 2 birds have been recorded at check in station and it's the same guy. None from our camp.

I heard one gobble this morning about 300 yards from me. Didn't hear a single sound after that.

Stay in woods untileveryone leaves just find a comfortable spot on top of a ridge and wait for all the hunters to get out of the woods. Those birds will crank back up around 10:00. They have adapted well. I would lay my calls on the ground and take a nap from 8:00-10:00.
