Anyone have friends or family, or possibly hunted in a club close to Virginia Beach/Suffolk, VA area? Im looking for a club this way.

I recently moved to Alexandria, Va this fall. I'm in a club about 2 hours south just north of Richmond. I'm not very familiar with the southern part of the state, but i do know they kill some huge deer.

The best way to find clubs here is to use Facebook, as VA hunting forums dont get much traffic. Search for Virginia Deer hunting or Virginia Deer clubs.

Dog hunting is huge up here. I would say 85% of clubs are dog hunting.

AS I recall there is no Sunday hunting also. And get used to the 1970's smoking mentality!

I was in a club in Brunswick County a couple of years ago. They did not run dogs (most clubs in that part of the country only run dogs and just about don't all stalk hunting in gun season). Brunswick County also allows rifle hunting. It was about 2k acres owned by a farmer. Good deer and a good bunch of guys that only hunt mature deer. Club was Sunrise hunting club http://www.sunrisehuntclub.com They have contact info on the site. Good luck finding a club up there. PM me if you need more but you might want to post to say you pm'd me as I don't log in much, just view as a guest.

Actually, you now can hunt on Sundays without dogs.

The smoking thing is correct. Also, hunting in general hasn't evolved like it has here in Alabama. Land management hasn't really caught on. These guys mostly dog hunt. Still hunting isn't popular, so not many clubs plant fields or have shooting houses. A still hunter can basically join a dog club and have it for their selves bow/black powder season.

Fun fact.. its legal to shoot turkeys on deer drives in November. I for one think that's a sin.

After rereading The Tenth Legion by Tom Kelly......I concur with his descriptions of dog hunting clubs.

I forgot to mention that SRHC has around 30 farm ponds that you can fish and a decent campground with a well and power. I did do some fishing there and caught bass. No wallhangers but it's a good thing to make it a year round club. Dues in Virginia are also ALOT cheaper than Alabama.

I took a look at their website and was really impressed. Looks like a wonderful group of people. Like someone said - a little old fashioned (in a good way). Almost like looking back in time a little bit. Very reasonable and well thought out rules.

If I lived in that area I would try to join it for sure. thumbup

Good deal. I know that is a good ride and you have to plan on camping out. Good luck finding a club!
