We started in the yellow yesterday, orange earlier today and now in the red. Why are the bad weather events usually in the middle of the night?

Because an actual NWS weatherman who is no longer here once posted a notice about the WATHER and it stuck.

There's talk of closing Mobile county schools early tomorrow. Don't know what good that's gonna do, if it's gonna be late in night..

Lots of schools closing.

We are in a new age of erring to the side of caution after April 27th, 2011. It was a wake up call and the entire state took notice. It may not do anything, but the risk is now only one level from the highest on the new chart.

I had never heard of a PDS (particularly dangerous situation) being issued before the 2011 event. The level for storms tomorrow night is now just one forecast level below that.

The Enterprise tornado in 2007 that hit right when school was letting out and killed several kids is also part of the extra caution. Its dangerous as heck for school buses to be running around in the middle of a storm outbreak.

Thanks!

Everyone keep your eyes open and stay safe. Looks better up this way but I'll be watching.

NWS is showing a lot of concern about this one. The spokesman down here (Coastal Area) is normally very calm and monotone, but you could hear a difference in his briefing today.

I've noticed this also and wondered if there was a reason for it. Hits west bama late afternoon and rolls through my area Lee county between the same predicted time as this storm 10pm-4am every time

In short - the sun. The heating of the day and de-stabilization of the atmosphere. Conditions degrade as the day progresses. Once they get to a point to support certain unfavorable conditions, it can be sustained after sunset.

Of course, bad weather can happen anytime. But, your location, in relation to the timing of the front, will affect what happens. The MS/AL state line along I-20/59 is the southern tornado alley. This puts those systems in East AL after dark most of the time. You are correct that there's a pattern.

The really "bad" ones aren't. There may be severe weather and tornadoes in the middle of the night, but the vast majority of F3-F5 tornadoes are typically in the late afternoon to evening. The atmosphere loses a lot of energy with the lack of sunlight and daytime heating. The wind shear and lift is still there after dark but the instability for a long track, large tornado is significantly lower.
