Anyone else get the survey email about mandatory check-in from the DCNR? #1625439

Survey from the DCNR ... Questions about:

— whether you hunt deer, turkey
— area in the state (has 5 areas)
— whether you support/oppose mandatory check-in
— how you would want a check system (phone, computer, physical check station, etc.)

And then the survey crashed while I was filling it in.

Apparently the rumors of big changes on the way are true, or some of them.

Since you DCNR and CAB guys covertly monitor this site, here's a suggestion not just from me but by many: Publicly explain with good reasoning how this information will be used for the biological benefit of deer and turkeys, and how it won't be used to create trophy bucks for the QDM crowd. Because that's a huge perception by a lot of Joe Average hunters.

Thanks for at least asking for public input about it with the survey, too, unlike the comical screw-up from a couple of years ago.

Yep.

I wish they would find something better to do with the little bit of money they have than beat this dead horse.

If it helps create better management data and improved deer and turkey populations and hunting for us, then is it worth it?

If we had problems with those things then maybe so. But we don't, and we have more deer and turkey by area than most other states, and we got to that point with out tagging and check system. I know there are some areas that need some help but there are better common sense ways to do it.

Yes it is. Give them credit because at least they are trying. What the outcome may be I don't know.

Since the questions where about districts and not zones maybe they are looking at something different than a one size fits all plan for the two zones in the entire state. We'll see.

And Clem, if we wanted the best things for the management of our wildlife maybe we should demand that CAB members have wildlife credentials.........and making money off the industry don't cut it.

I completed it and was glad to see it hit my inbox. Checking a deer in has nothing to do with growing deer for trophy hunters. It has to do with monitoring the resource. The only reason I can see that a person doesn't want a mandatory turn in system is because they break the law or plan on breaking the law. If you are a law breaker then they should arrest your butt.

You are correct. But the perception among many hunters is mandatory check-in is nothing but a way for the state to curtail their recreational activities. It is a public relations problem that many DNRs, not just Alabama's, have failed to recognize and embrace by providing good, reliable, biology-based explanations for things they do or want to do.

To their credit, DCNR did it with the Snapper Check and it was accepted, used and has been helpful. But merely assuming that "the user group wants this, and WE think it's good, so they'll just do it" is wrong and backfires, as it did two years ago.

I could say that everyone who deigns to submit to mandatory reporting is a liberal government-loving ass-kisser who bows to The Man, but I wouldn't do that because I know that's not true. Your assertion also is not true.
