Welcome Jr. I didn't have any idea what I wanted to do at your age and you'll probably change your mind before you graduate. However if you still want to be a warden when you graduate and if it pays what your lifestyle needs then follow your dreams.
Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

Welcome to the site and congratulations on having some ambition. Being a game warden is a tough, demanding but rewarding job as you help serve the public.
Study hard in school, learn as much as you can, don't shrug off the education and be diverse. Strive to make good grades. Join some groups or clubs and be around other people because if you are a game warden you'll have to deal with the public in good and bad situations. Enjoy your time in school and college with your friends, and then light a fire under whatever you want to pursue.

Welcome to the group jr. I've always liked the old saying "get a job you like and you will never work a day in your life". After high school I wanted to be a GW too, but instead I went the machining program at wallace state for 18 months. I dropped out and joined army, and have been in almost 17 years,I have enjoyed my time in service but, it's almost time to move on. Do what you want to do and don't be persuaded by others, if you want to be a GW after graduation go for it. Go to college, set Hugh standards for your self, and surround your self with like minded individuals.

Those jobs are not easy to come by even though they don't pay nearly what they deserve. The best bet is by way of another job in Law Enforcement or the military for practical experience. You will be tested also on general aptitude material, so the ability to learn is important. The best way to hone the ability to learn is in school, so stay at it as long as you can afford to do so
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I have a friend whos son wanted to be a warden and went to Auburn for schooling. I dont have all the details but this is what I know . He went thru the biologist training etc and after talking to a lot of people he added some classes for timber/ag etc. He ended up being hired by a timber company 3 months before he graduated for almost twice the starting salary of a warden.
He has all his weekends off to hunt. Gets free access to hunt the timber companies land. Co truck, retirement whole 9 yards.
Wardens are working the most during hunting season so that would way limit your own hunting not to mention the "on call" part of it. I agree with JMJ on the on call. Ive had a on call job for 25 years and it is a pain.
I kick my butt everytime I think about not going into the military at 18. By 38 ya have your 20 yrs in and a gov retirement. 20 yrs sounds like a long time now but 20 years flys by and the military opens so many more doors for you.
I have another friend whos son was a MP for 8 yrs. He came out and decided he wanted to be a LEO. Well after talking to a lot of people he ended up hiring in with a "security guard" co that works gates at military facilities. They only hire ex military people. Pay started out at 60k a yr and all he does is ck badges coming thru the guard house. Well above what PD's were offering and no working out in the heat/cold, no wrecks in the rain,or dealing with drunks etc.
Talk to all the people you can before you make a decision.

I don't know where you guys get your information, but Troy and Matt kill some of the biggest deer this State has to offer. Matt always gets plenty of deer , I'm sure Troy does too. Of course troy is retired now, but i doubt much has changed .Its a matter of what you want. Most of the timber companys have their own biologists and game wardens too. Just get your education and keep an open mind.Either way enjoy your time in the woods. Hunt safe

Talk to all the people you can before you make a decision. The military isn't bad. I will retire in about three years, I could get out and get a good federal, state, or DoS if I wanted. The down side to it is I would be away from my family alot so, I'm going to pass on that. On the upside I will be retired at 40 with medical, and drawing a pension.

Sorry for the late post. Tracker Jr, I'm a retired GW. IF a GW job is what you want then I'd advise study hard, make good grades, get in at least two years in Law Enforcement Junior College or four year college. The job is mostly law enforcement, throw in some biology, and a lot of public relations work. Learn to shoot a handgun, yer life will depend on it. Contrary to what some say you will have pl;enty of time to hunt because of the 40 hour work week, rarely overtime(and it is scheduled). Any GW that can't find a good place to hunt ain't much of a GW. (just pick and choose WHO ya hunt with). ^^^this plus... Stay out of trouble and hang out with friends that don't get into trouble. A criminal history is hard to get past in any job, but especially law enforcement. In a few years when you are a junior or senior in highschool call your local Wildlife and freshwater fisheries office and set up a ride along. When you get to be a junior or senior in college and you're still interested in being a game warden then contact the wildlife and fisheries office to try and set up an internship.
