Does anyone know anything about Southern Sportsman Hunting Club in Sumter Co? I'm looking for a family oriented club and was trying to find out some info on this one.

This place is garbage, We have been in this club since 1976 and the only reason we are in it is because some of there land joins some of our property. We go over and eat at the lodge about twice a year. The reason its garbage is because they have way to many members and they shoot about anything they see. There are a lot of members in that club that hunts everyday of season. And not to mention the arguments at the sign in board, I have been in this club my whole life and I have only hunted it 3 or 4 times in 33 years and that was when I played baseball at University Of West Alabama and lived on the place.

How could he be in a club in 1976 if he wasn't born until 1982 though? That is alot of money to pay for two meals a year, lol.

My family has been in the club since 1976, I am 33 years old and yes I was born in 1982. You asked about how the club was and I was telling you my experience. And yes I eat a steak dinner down there about twice a year. We have stayed in the club, because it joins some of our property. I will be glad to give you a list of people that used to be in the club so you can contact them.

There is nothing worse than getting in a club that isn't any good. So just trying to help the guy out that asked the question.

I was a member for 2 years. Not a good place.

1) Membership fees are deceiving. You will be hit with an assessment soon after joining so ask about that. Usually several hundred dollars.

2) The deer hunting as far as numbers and trophy deer (nice 8 for this conversation) is below what you can get for the money elsewhere.

3) The club is controlled by a small group of people that have been there many years and they don't know anything about quality deer management and bully people.

4) The sign in procedures are horrid and there are fights and or disagreements on most mornings when there is a large turnout.

5) People can come to eat and drink at the club house if hey purchase a social guest membership. This may clear up the above confusion so I take that gentleman at his word.

This is just my opinion, but ask to contact a dozen or so of the people that have left in the last couple of years (don't just go on a select small group that theyhave pre-screened, the turnover is very high) and you decide. Ask about one of the past club house managers named Bill, who did do a good job in my mind, and the assault that took place on him, and ask for his contact info. They will have it because he was going to sue them.

There will always be two sides to the story, but after doing your homework I think this place won't be worth your trouble or maybe you have the money to throw away and can risk it.

Good luck with your search sir!

Fights at sign in board?!
Assaults?!
Name dropping?!
Bunch of liars?!
Hidden money to be spent?!
Getting sued?!

Sounds like a normal family holiday.

Interesting that I have no clue who you are, since you've been a member since forever, and I spent about 5 solid years down there. I don't disagree with everything that you said, but I think people also have unrealistic expectations about their club and land and the people they share it with.
