I have been hunting Bama for 4 years now. When I or my boys kill anything besides a doe, I will be proud to report it, lol

LOL I'm guessing they weren't seeing any deer? Or was it something in the data collected that triggered a shift?

Reading the comments on choccoloca back in the day and this thread here ., Seems like hunting is not what it used to be, coyotes are spreading like wildfire .. And yet we call ourselves conservative republicans yet we harvest does like left wing liberals .

Our target has been dropping at a steady rate over the last few years with this year's goal being basically the same as last. We are not trying to reduce deer numbers anymore. We are looking to at worst just maintaining the herd we have or at best slightly increase the herd. Our weights are up on both does and bucks so our herd is healthy and there is plenty of natural browse to support the herd we have or even an increase so there is no need to kill a lot of does anymore especially with the bears and coyotes helping out wink And yes our hunter observation data played a part also. We log every hunt on the club.

I would have to do a little research to get the exact weights but in the early to mid nineties our does averaged mid eighties and our bucks averaged around 140.Last year all our does weighed between 100 and 109 and our smallest buck was 154.

This way you get the info, but you don't bog down our game warden's with trying to enforce game check among there many other duties. Also, some of these guys can get out of the office and get some of this info themselves. Talk to the game wardens in each county, talk to the biologists and county extension agents, talk to the deer processors, etc. It would take minimal effort for the processors to fill out a sheet each day for the number of bucks and does from each county.
It's the state's job to manage the deer herd to be healthy and in acceptable numbers. It's not the hunters responsibility to do there job for them. I'm pretty sure if you asked Matt or any of the biologists in there respective area they could tell you immediately if they needed to cut back on the doe harvest or not. This poor me attitude that we can't do our job because we don't have gamecheck is BS.

You have to have a HELP #. Your lifetime license has the old numbers and is not recognized in the new system.

I read somewhere in here about talking to processors... They don't want us anywhere around most of the time. Many believe it has a negative impact. They dang sure don't want us tracking the number of deer processed, they think we are the IRS for some reason rolleyes

That has been discussed. Some work really well with us though.

IMO, The processors would be the key to enforcing bag limits, or getting solid statistical data. Kentucky for example, makes them record info and tag number at the processor.

They might be but how many deer do you think are processed for cash money? I am sure processors believe that once they become a check-in point that cash transaction will have to be tracked for taxes because there is proof a deer came through. Processors have/will fight that.

II know it doesn't have to mean they processed that deer. The DCNR isn't interested in their business either, just critters. Just telling you how it will go in AL.

A good percentage of folks don't use a processor. Also, what about the folks that live out of state? How are you going to get an out of state processor comply with AL law?

This is one aspect, the tax thing (real or not). Another is the processors would be, at least via hunters' perceptions, "working for The Man."

You may have to do a little bit of a PR campaign telling the processors that you are just interested in the data only. For this matter, they could just fill out last name and first initial of the harvestor, along with sex, approx. age, etc. In any system you are going to have law breakers and that is a constant in any of the solutions, so you can't worry about if they are paying cash, processing on there own, out of state, or etc. Also, when renewing your hunting license you fill out a quick short form that says what you harvested the year before (similar to the migratory bird form). This gives you your samples without making hunters law breakers if they forget. Then the state needs to get out and talk to biologists, game wardens, county extension agents and etc. in each county. In reality, this alone would probably get the info necessary to make a decision but the other stuff is just supporting documentation if needed.

I've always lived in states that required deer to be tagged, and in Illinois they have to be physically checked in where they receive a steel locking tag. When I've shot bucks in Alabama, I've immediately recorded the info on the harvest record, and used my IPhone to call the 800 # and get a confirmation number. Being a Yankee in a Bama club, I want to make sure I abide by all the laws.

But it's not a law to report your buck or doe. So you're not abiding by anything other than your personal choice for a voluntary program, which is good if you're into that.
