I would recommend a 250-2 stroke for your size, they can make an amazing trail bike if you play with the gearing, they have a lot more bottoms end then a 125, they're also cheaper and easier to rebuild if you were to blow out the top end

Safety gear? Boots for ankle protection, though you don't necessary have to have MX style boots. They do have the extra protection where you need it most though.

Gloves. If you come off the bike & go over the bars, you'll be glade your mits are covered.

Pants. I've got a good set of Fox Racing ones and like them. Again, protection panels where you need it most. Much more so than jeans.

Helmet & goggles each and every time on the bike. Take a tree branch to the eye and you'll appreciate the gogs.

-- I tend to agree w' you on the saftey of bikes over ATVs w' kids. Mine had a XR70 trail bike and did fine. Bumps, bruises, busted lip (probably needed stitches) but nothing broken. Granted, I had him outfitted top to bottom in riding gear to include boots & chest protector.

For your body weight I would recommend something in the 400 to 500 range and 4 stroke. I have a WR 250 2 stroke and I'm 5'9" and 168lbs - and it is perfect for me. Since you are 240 pounds you really need a lot more than a 250. There are some odd sizes these days, like 350 and 450 also. That 350 would probably be the minimum for your weight.

I'm thinking about adding a KTM 250 4 stroke to my garage some time after deer season.

Check this out for some comparison discussion:

Good luck!

All the gear all the time! Motocross boots, knee braces, gloves, helmet and googles.
I have been riding dirt since 1973, you will fall and you will get hurt. How badly depends on a lot of things, gear helps lessen the hurt.
The Honda you are looking at will be challenged only because the suspension is set up for 150 lb riders from the factory, but that can be fixed. They run great and can last along time.
Make sure you get one that has been serviced. Oil changes, air filter and a valve adjustment or two depending on mileage.
Find someone to ride with as mentioned and it will make things easier and a lot more fun.
Take your time, research and have fun!

So get a 4 stroke and find a group of folks to ride with. You will gain a ton from following and learning from more experienced folks. Plus they will know of more places to go to and that's what makes it fun.

I took the kx 250 off of TC's hands this past Sunday and with the little bit of riding I've done on it around the house, it is insanly fast and will stand up with minimul effort.. But it's fun smile

You got a good one he did a great job restoring it. Be careful it will put you on your back quick.

I used to ride when I was a kid. Used to go to the track every weekend. We lived out in the country and built us a small course. 40' table top, couple of doubles, berms in the turns. I loved it. Used to be able to handle the hell out of that yz125 at 13-15years old. Went 6 or 7 years without riding and jumped on my buddies sooped up cr250. Thought I was still a bad ass. Within 10 minutes I had that thing shoot out from under me doing a wheelie down a gravel road. Had a major skint ass.

Riding a bike is easy, it's the handling it that takes a lot of time on it.

I'll second the comment about motorcycles making smart men stupid. I had a ninja in college. Put about 3500 miles on it, used to ride it turkey hunting. Caught myself doing 130 down an old county road one night, and had a oh chit moment. That had become the norm. Sold it and haven't looked back, I'm too young to be paralyzed over an adrenaline rush

Awesome bike but I'm not quite ready to pull the trigger yet and when I do that'll be quite a bit out of my budget anyway.

I would definitely suggest the Neck Brace in addition to Chest protector, gloves, Boots and kidney belt. The riding Gear Pants and shirts are designed to protect you from strawberries and such. If you plan on riding much, id recommend it all.
