I'm wanting to rig up a deer skinning hoist under my open pole barn. It has those metal trusses with the square tubbing. I have a hand winch and cable already. Need to get a couple of pulleys I know but I'm trying to figure out how to mount the pulleyes to the metal trusses. I will attach the winch itself to one of the 6x6 post with lag bolts.

Question: Is it safe to drill a hole through one of the metal trusses?

Was thinking to start with about just using U bolts that fit around the metal and hang the pulleys on them but that makes my pulleys turned the wrong way. Or I suppose I could just buy swivel pullyes.

The drilling question was I was thinking about drilling a hole and using a open eye bolt type hook and just turning it the directing it needed for the pulley to hang the way that I need it.

Not much of a construction savvy guy here so I didn't know if it would hurt the integrity of the metal truss.

of course pics of your are always welcomed.

No, don't drill through the truss members. if you connect to the truss do it as close to the intersection of the diagonals of the truss members.

Just span a couple of the trusses with a length of 2X and then attach your pull to the lumber.

Use rope. Double or triple it. Done.

Get a pulley with a hook on it. Wrap a length of chain around your truss. Hook pulley to chain.

I would do a 4x4 spanning ~4 trusses. "Ibolt" thru 4x4, metal roof strap the 4x4 to the trusses.

Because my son or step son would use that to swing on or something when I wasn't paying attention.

You keep up all this building and you'll have to construct us a club house on the 59 side!

We used small sections of welded chain and a bolt to attach the pulley to. They can go around the truss with out drilling any holes.

Works great! If cable is nylon, I would replace with a wire cable. Ours was an old boat winch and when skinning a deer (and pulling down hard) the rope broke.

Thanks guys for all the showgestions.

Sumpter_al.....It came with a cable already installed.

Walt4dun......Ya'll need a bigger sign out shed down there for sure. Now that the club has went back to the two sign outs. I figure reason the small one is on the end is because of the two locations will probably always be on a year by year status. I was trying to do something similar to the hoist we have there at the club on both ends except transfer that idea to under and attached to my pole barn.

If you span a 4x4 over several trusses, you can spread the weight out.

They are moving it to that first log deck, they shoved it off & are allowing campers too. Hopefully the two sign outs will continue, it sure does make it more convenient IMO.

I used a similar set up under my pole barn for my skinning rack. I had a few shackles laying around so I used those and they worked fine. I had a large shackle that fit around the bottom of the truss. I put another shackle through that shackle and attached it to the pulley. I've hung 200 pound deer from it with no problems. I'll try to get a pic posted this afternoon if I get a chance.
