I had a gmc canyon same as the Colorado in high school. Way better gas mileage and when I left for the military mom started driving it and still does to this day. Just don't expect to haul a trailer as it sits so low.

My recommendation would be a 1978 F800 pulpwood truck. Probably what I'm gonna get my wife to drive next. Apparently wheels and mirrors are consumable items..

kids should know how to drive manual transmissions if even they are dying off quickly I agree! My first truck was a manual. Dad threw me in there, gave me one lesson and sent me off. Can't believe I didn't burn up a clutch in that truck. 'Course, it was a Toyota.

For a 17yo I'd go with a single cab just because it limits the amount of passengers/distractions in the vehicle. And the uglier the better, my dad bought me the ugliest ford ranger in alabama at 16, it was do do brown and turkey turd tan and that truck made me work my butt off so I could get a new one!!!!
JUST MAKE SURE IT'S NOT DO DO BROWN AND TURKEY TURD TAN, MOST KIDS CAN'T FIGHT LIKE I CAN!!! Mine was a 77' International scout II with a 304 and such a bad leak when you got to school you smelt like oil.exhaust...also had a 76' pinto wagon in baby vomit/poop yellow green..4sp 2.3 and I did snatch the drive shaft out of it from spinning in the gravel..lol

1989 Isuzu pup pickup. Thing ran terrible and left me stranded a few times. I sure did work my tail off to make payments on that gmc canyon. wish I still had that Isuzu now. Paw paw gave it to me.

Just putting this out there as I was looking for my daughter a car not too long ago.
I have a friend who is a wreck investigator. He's a Vietnam vet, and a Birmingham PD vet. He said after all his time investigating wrecks and testifying in court, there are two vehicles he would not recommend for teenagers: Ford Mustangs and any pickup trucks. My daughter wanted both, but we took his advice ans stayed away. I really wanted to get her tank, but I guess gas mileage would've been rough and she would have been banned from driving it to school (or anywhere else for that matter. LOL).

Of all the wrecks he's worked, he said the most that were killed were driving Mustangs or pickups.

Unless he is saying a mustang will get a kid I trouble versus it being unsafe. Also, there ain't no way in hell a pickup truck (full size) is going to lose against a kia, Camry, Altima or whatever popular has savers there is. If he is saying that the drivers skill level is best suited for something besides a mustang or a truck, I can go along with that.

Older straight 6 Cherokee. I have a 93 with over 250k and the parts are everywhere and the 4wd is unbeatable. $2500 is what I paid for mine. I can speak from experience if you are ever to be in a head on collision a jeep Cherokee is the vehicle you want to be in. 60mph S10 traveling about the same speed with drunk driver changed lanes and hit us head on. Jeeps front end was demolished but the cab was in perfect shape not a single bruise was led on us!
