Went with my neighbor and put out 6 coyote sets just now.
We saw a lot of sign, so I hope to have some yotes to kill in the morning.
Will update tomorrow.

Well, nothing today. Hopefully later in the week we'll get one.

central ala,
I have stopped for the moment. Several reasons from having some timber cut to ants were eating up my bait. But through the summer I had my best luck right after a rain. Don't think I caught any on the first night of the set. Stick with it and GOOD LUCK!!

Ants are always a problem. Try drilling a deeper hole. I like a bait hole about 4-5 inches across in diameter and about 10-12 inchs deep. Lots of times if your not getting first night catchs its either = you are leaving too much scent behind OR you are using to much lure/urine.

No bait just urine.
I've also had better results with a charred log sticking out in the road rather than a dirt hole set.

No doubt I was doing both wrong. I will get serious soon.

And I'll also add that my catch rate is only about 20% of the traps I set per week.I usually run between 40 and 60 traps on our lease in the summer and I'll run them for 2 weeks pull them and reset in other areas and my average is around 10 a week. Running that number of traps is the main reason I stay away from dirt holes they take a little more time yo complete. I use cheap duke traps so trying to set pan tension I've found impossible to get a constant 4 pounds for coyotes and dirt holes with bait on our place tend to produce fox and coons. Summer is way more effective than winter trapping for me plus trapping and deer hunting don't mix in my opinion. I built a stamp-like cookie cutter the exact size of my traps after a few slaps with a 3lb hammer I have a perfect shaped plug that can be removed and my trap beds perfectly with no movement.

Stikman is right on the Charred logs. A Walk Threw OR Post Set with a little Coyote or Fox Gland lure and/or urine can be very good. I have used Dukes as well in the past = If I was in a place that they might get stolen. I would Night Latch them . Now I run MB-550s. They give me a consistent 3 lbs of pan tention.

If I didn't have 3 kids in private school I'd have me a string of Mb's.
I've never had a trap stolen, I don't flag mine I just mark mine on GPS through an app on my phone or tablet. The only time I use flags is on a bobcat set and I only trap cats when someone asks for one to have mounted.

No yotes today. We are going to leave them out until Thursday and hope we get something by then.

Nothing wrong with DUKES . I caught 100s of coyotes in No 2 dukes. If you Night Latch they they do pretty well. BUT on a longline you just spend to much time adjusting them after catches , i think.

All of mine have been filed down and night latched. Its just the fact of taking them apart replacing the pan screw adding washers and setting the tension for 3.5-4 pounds and after its set for a week it changes and needs adjusting.....
Just a hassle that most people don't consider. Id rather a fox come into my set and piss that way he refreshes the scent post and leaves. I'll catch him in the winter if I need to. I'm trapping for coyotes and only coyotes and me and my two boys have been very successful at it. We've put a hell of a dent in the population in the last 4 years on our 7400 acres. For the last 2 months I've been so wrapped up in work I haven't had the time and as I was riding around this past weekend every yote turd on our place had deer hair in it!!!!
And as far as I know I'm the only one around that traps, none of our neighbors think it's an issue.

They get harder to catch during fawning season. Food right now is plentiful and most of them are layed in the shade. Take a couple of game cameras with you and put them on the traps. You'll see everything your doing wrong and right video is the best and hang them high and look down so you can see where they are placing their feet. I didn't have anyone to show me how to trap and after reading up and watching my cameras of a set that didnt have a trap just the lure I caught on pretty quick and learned more from my cameras than anything.
What these woods need is a few more trappers

Stay after them! If I ever get off work I'm gonna try to clean traps up and set a few!
