There are endless tutorial videos out there on youtube. As simple or complex as you want. I'd recommend starting out by learning some basic chords. You'd be shocked how many songs you can play with just 3 or 4 chords.

Search YouTube for the user "martyzsongs". He's got a bunch of tutorials.

MartySongz on youtube is by far the best person doing tutorials, That I've found. Ultimateguitar.com is where I find all of my lyrics, chords, tabs and etc.

Learn a few basic chords and just search for songs using those chords. G, D, E minor and C are used in a boat load of country songs, in the same order, over and over.

Also, be patient, It may take you a while to get your hands used to the shape of the chords. Once you get the chord shapes down then you can work on switching from chord to chord. Get ready for the tips of your fingers to be sore too. Good luck!

Also, this may be a tip for further down the road, but don't be afraid to play and jam with other people. I grew the fastest in my guitar playing when I got together with friends and just jammed together.

Yep. If you have any buddies that play, even if they aren't very good, play with them. A case of beer and my guitar playing buddy taught me alot of the little that I know.

The attached link has a lot of great info. It walks you through a few chords at a time and as you progress there are songs that you can play with the learned chords. Justin guitar

I bought a guitar a few years back and tried to learn a little bit on it. I had several chords down pat and could transition back and forth ok. I just never could make it sound worth a flip and finally got frustrated and put it down. It didn't help that a buddy from work was helping me learn and then he got himself fired over something stupid.

I need to pick it back up.

Check out the yousician app . It is an interactive learning app. The good thing about starting out electric is that it will be easier on your fingers. The cheaper acoustics that most start on are hell on your finger tips

I like this one as well. Like others have said, stay patient at first. Its not something you can force. You're basically creating muscle memory in your hands that eventually won't even require you thinking about it. Find some of the most basic drills that they show in these videos and repeat them each day. It'll eventually start getting easier. I'm still a novice myself but I can hit a lick or two that still impresses a bunch of buzzed up folks around a campfire. The key is to wait until everyone gets good and lit before you break out the guitar.

yep. teach yourself the basic chords, even scales. Understanding music theory will help you learn faster. After that, find a few simple songs you want to learn, find tablature for them online, even a you tube help video. If you have a good ear, you'll quickly learn how to pick out tunes you hear.

Anyone on here ever taught themselves how to play the banjo? I'd love to be able to play it but I don't have time to go somewhere for lessons. I could practice for 30 minutes at home by the time I drove somewhere, and drove back.

Always wished I could play. Never had a interest in electric guitars or rock music. Just some pickin and singin around a fire with drinks. Only thing I can add to this thread worth a damn is this. For the love of God, please do not have "jam" sessions or "jam" out or ask other musicians if they want to get together and "jam"! It just sounds queer mixed with douche baggery. My brother in law is a decent musician and can play a few instruments but it drives me nuts to hear him say "jam".

would it sound less gay if he'd say "Let's get together and play with each other?"

I've been playing guitar for 25 years and the best advice I can give you is to find someone who will spend some time teaching you chord construction and fundamental music theory. You need to have an understanding of why as much as how when you begin playing. Also learning from a friend will keep you motivated as it is very easy to get discouraged when you are trying to learn by yourself.

Furflyin - Never taught myself banjo, I took lessons for a few months several years ago. Don't play much now. I'm pretty sure you could find some instructional videos on youtube about the banjo. There aren't too many instruments that don't have how to videos online nowadays
