back when i was young we didn't know what buying bait was . i'd get sheet of tin and spread out behind the barn and catch all the black crickets i wanted . dug all the worms i needed . salamanders come in handy too . got older , we'd net all the crawfish/minnows we needed.

any body ever saw a blue crawdad .?

when i dove hunted around the pond i'd fish with the dove guts .

Absolutely! When I was younger, my brother & I had to catch bait before my Grandfather would take us fishing. Wasp larva was the most dangerous bait used. Besides the obvious danger of acquiring the bait, you also had to worry about newly hatched wasps in the mason jar. Bait catching was an adventure!!

Along with what others have mentioned, I've caught lizard, and frogs for bait as well. Haven't tried a snake yet but I'm sure it would work.

We get the blue crawfish In the crawfish ponds around here. Not sure what causes it but I will talk to some crawfish farmers and get the story behind it.

Oh yeah. I get two nest out of each spot most years. One in the spring and one at the end of summer. Fill up a bucket in a hurry with that stuff.

It be's that way sometimes.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I did when I was a young boy. I fished every day during the summer. I caught all kinds of bugs and put them on a hook! My neighbor had catawba trees and would let me have all the worms! grin

My boy was introduced to fishing with wasp larvae a few weeks back after I knocked a bunch of nests down at the farm. I gathered up a cup full of baby mice for him too while I was cleaning up in the shop and he had some fun bass fishing with them.

More than once I've had to talk him out of using his pet gecko as bait for that big bass he's after. rolleyes

I've caught some good bream with wasp larvae. I'll still like to catch grasshoppers for bait while I'm fishing.

Yep,

Used them, and used to turn over dried cow patties in the pasture and catch crickets.

We always had to walk across a big cow pasture on the way to the creek, carried a stick to flip over cow patties and a jaw to put the worms in that we get from under the cow patties. Always had a jar full by the time we got to the creek.

How do you hook a baby mouse? Do they work good?

Ya'll ever use a turned tawger? Just take a tawger worm, tear it in half, use a small stick and turn it inside out and put it on the hook.
