... will be found in Jacksonville, where the FCS No. 1 Gamecocks led by John Grass are pretty doggone impressive.
I watched them Saturday start slowly against Tennessee State University. Figured it probably would happen after the AU game. There were some sloppy moments and stupid calls/penalties. They couldn't seem to get in sync and TSU was playing pretty tough.
Then JSU got rolling and ended up with more than 350 rushing yards and 277 in the air -- 323 total yards in the first half -- for a 48-13 win. The defense knocked out TSU's quarterback on the first series, played a confident "we're going to stop your butts" game and by halftime it was over. The kicker did clang the right goalpost on a FG attempt - again - but hit a couple of others.
JSU's stadium is fantastic, the atmosphere is fun and the Gamecocks probably are the most solid, confident, thorough team I've seen. And after the game I saw two kids throwing a football on the field like in the old days before security guards and overbearing big-time "you can't do that" administrators took over.
One stupid thing, though ... JSU's head coach trotted on the field with THREE STATE TROOPERS jogging along with him. THREE? With all the budget mess going on, all the insanity about money and over-spending and the need for law enforcement to be on the road doing the public good, JSU's football coach has THREE STATE TROOPERS protecting him on the field between the goal line and sideline. That's insane.

Seriously Clem? I respectfully disagree! I believe the best football team in Alabama is recovering from a loss in Tuscaloosa today. Five turnovers, and still in the game against an upper-tier program with a chance to win. Be honest and stop looking through your orange/blue glasses.

You want to make this a UA-AU thing and accuse me of wearing orange/blue glasses while peering through your own dishonest "Yay Team!" Fanboi Glasses? Ha.
Jax State has zero questions about its quarterback, offense, defense, confidence or gameplan. For straight football JSU is the best team in the state.

Didn't they lose to the Auburn team that played on TV yesterday?

Yep. They're still better.
Ben, you made a great initial post on your other thread. No barbs or BS, good sportsmanship. Wish all fans were like that.

Good thing AU had them on the schedule. Might be the only win they get for a while

Claims, you're the one who introduced the BS into this with your "orange/blue" comment. I mentioned nothing about either team.
Phil, you're right.

I hate this thread got hijacked because I don't think JSU gets enough respect for their accomplishments.
Coach Grass took them to the playoffs last year which was his first year as Head Coach. He's done some solid recruiting and he's taken some Div I scrubs and made them into solid players.
I didn't pay any attention to the State Troopers. I bet 99% of the people couldn't pick John Grass out of a lineup if he was the only one there.

The State Troopers are JSU grads, each of whom has volunteered with the athletic program in the past. They are proud of their school's athletic programs & wanted to be involved in yesterday's Gamecock football game. There's no harm in all three staying with Grass if they wanted.
Clem - PM me when you're coming back to J'ville. We might even round up Dustin too.

I didn't realize they had such a nice stadium. May have to go check out a game this season Without a doubt, they are the best coached TEAM in the state of Alabama.

Y'all come down for the October 3rd game and we can set up for a nice tailgate beforehand.
That's a 1pm Kick against Mississippi Valley State (Jerry Rice played there).

I'm unable until at least November due to family plans on weekends but would love to get back down for another game and visit.
Last time I was there was 2009. That stadium's all growed up now.
