El Nino may make for a wet winter.

central ala,
I read that yesterday. Said cold and wet for us. Possibly an ice storm and unusual snow. Now, they can't get tomorrow right, not sure I trust 3 months from now.

Unless it's unseasonably warm, that means plenty of snow in Hillbilly land. smile

I'm gonna go ahead and buy some milk and bread just in case.

I'm not even sure they could tell us the weather from yesterday with more than 50% accuracy.

Generalities can be made in relation to El Nino or La Nina. People get upset with day-to-day weather forecasts because they expect meteorologists to know the exact hour it's going to rain at their house. Summertime forecasts have to be generic (30% chance of thunderstorms) because the storms are due to stochastic convection of the atmosphere. It may rain an inch and a half on one place and then be bone dry across the street. Winter forecasts are a little easier since storms are driven by fronts that the models can see coming days in advance.

Anyways, there are generalities that tend to be associated with El Ninos. The Southeast is affected by them, but not as strongly as other parts of the world.

James Spann has been harping all summer long about how the Atlantic hurricane basin has been extremely quiet this year because of the El Nino. This doesn't mean there will never be a hurricane in the Atlantic during an El Nino. It just means an El Nino sets up the atmosphere to not favor hurricane development in the Atlantic. Below is a quote from James Spann off of Facebook just a few minutes ago (yet he contradicts himself to some degree saying he doesn't trust seasonal outlooks when he's been talking El Nino/hurricanes every morning in his videos). The Godzilla El Nino is media crap though.

"Almost every night on national news media outlets, we hear of "monster storms" with "80 million in the path" that are "unprecedented". Today a new level of hyperbole has been introduced with a "Godzilla" El Nino.
The truth is that we are in a very significant El Nino cycle. But, understand we only have good ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) phase data back to the 1950s, and there is much to learn. What does it mean for Alabama? El Nino winters here tend to be fairly wet, relatively mild, and occasionally stormy. We also have intrusions of shallow cold air at times, which can open the door for ice issues. But, long time readers know I am no fan of seasonal outlooks since there is very little skill in them. We will just have to wait and see..."
