Other than the obvious "dead" answer, what kind of bee/wasp is this?

CR, I think what you have there is a Cicada Killer.

We've had these identified in an earlier thread. They are a type of hornet that nests in the ground. Bigger than a common hornet that builds paper nests. I can't remember the official name. I've never been stung by one and I'm sure that I don't want to be. Big stinger on a big hornet.

The thing in Claims Reps picture is a Cicada Killer. The hornets that nest in the ground are European Hornets.

Thats my thought as well. Body is too long for a hornet.

I think so too. I looked them up and supposedly you just about have to make them sting you, much less aggressive than normal wasps and hornets. Awful mean looking, though.

Cicada killer and it's actually a wasp.

Cicada killer, they are solitary insects so they are only aggressive to each other and not towards people, just like carpenter bees.

No, a news bee isn't as big as this wasp. They are about hornet sized. This wasp is European hornet sized.

Cicada Killer. Harmless, unless you pick one up. It packs a whopper of a sting, if you do.
