I've got a mosin nagant that I'd like to shorten the barrel on. It's been counterbored and is ridiculously inaccurate, 2 ft groupings at 50 yards w/ keyholing, so I figure I wont be at a loss if I mess it up. I'm thinking about going with a hack saw then filing the end down just like on this tutorial: http://www.castbullet.com/misc/hack.htmAnyone done something similar?

If it currently can't do better than 24" @ 50yds, what have you got to lose?

That was my thought exactly. I like to think that no more than 12" of that is shooter error so I have to blame something.

Shooting stuff mostly.
Just plinking with surplus ammo, I threw a big scope on it to see if I can it stuff a little further out but its a mosin so I dont expect magic. Just something better than 2 ft at 50 yards.

I wonder if the accuracy would improve or get worse when you cut it? if it's shooting 2-foot groups at 50 yds, I don't think it could get much worse, aside from maybe blowing up in his face, daffy duck-esque.

What are you planning on using it for? Well duh. It sounds like it should work fine as long as you don't plan on hitting what you shoot at.

Are you sure you are using the right ammo? That is a lot of spread, and I do not think that the barrel crown is the problem. It sounds like the Barrel is so shot out that the bullet is not making any kind of contact with the barrel. It sounds like a 7mm bullet in an 8mm barrel. Before I did anything I would get a gun smith to look at it. I had a friend who's son blew up two ( not one but two) Mauser rifles in one day shooting the wrong ammo. A simple trip to someone who knew anything about guns would have saved two damn fine rifles his dad had brought back from WWII.

Here is one I did 4-5 years ago. Chopped barrel with a hacksaw and used a file a square to ensure everything was perfectly square. I also removed the rear dovetail and filled the pin holes. (Dremel followed by lots of draw filing). It has a Timney trigger and shoots under 1.5" with Privi Ammo and handloads. Now for your accuracy issues I would suggest slugging the barrel with a piece of lead. Some of these barrels will measure .308 up to .313. I have seen some ammo sold that actually had .308 bullets, so that could be the issue.

The reason I bought a mosin is to plink around with cheap surplus. I've eyeballed the barrel and the rifling looks strong. I'm not an expert but it doesn't look shot out to me. I just got here so I haven't found a gunsmith yet. A quick Google search only shows one in prattville, an archery shop. Which doesn't sound right. Anyone recommend a good gunsmith near prattville?

Slug it yourself first and save some money. Take a lead barrel weight slight larger than the bore and drive it through the barrel with a dowel rod. Then measure the diameter. I bet its a .312-313 bore. The cheap surplus is typically .310 diameter. You will need to reload more than likely.

Definitely going to give it a look. Thanks for the advice.

you MAY just need to crown the muzzle. i'd cut just short of the counterbored "crown." brownells sells crowning kits. i have used round-headed screws and valve-grinding compound. should be plenty of tutorials on the web ...

That's what I'm hoping. If the barrel is too big like the others have suggested then I've got a paper weight.

For those interested cutting the barrel did indeed help with my accuracy issue. It's not a sub moa shooter but it's on the paper at a 100... which is WAY better than where it was. The perceived report seems to be a bit louder though.
