To celebrate school being out for the summer, I'm taking my boy to fly fish at Sipsey Fork this weekend and hopefully catch his first rainbow trout. I know to call and get the generation schedule and saw that there's a fly shop nearby so we're gonna check that out while we're there. What else do I need to know about fishing the area?

5 trout per person, no culling from the creel, fishing license required.

Come over to the Cullman co. side for Fly fishing. When you get to the Birmingham water pump station on Co. Rd. 95 park and walk around the fence(right side). Once around the fence go back down to the water. From there fish your way upstream. In my opinion the best fishing is from the pump station upstream to the dam. Bring polarized sunglasses and you'll be able to see the trout better. The best spots are the deeper pools of water. I saw some nice size fish this morning and they have been biting pretty good early in the morning, so come early. I don't know much about fly fishing so this statement may be useless, but they fly fishermen I've checked lately said dry flies and nymphs were working pretty good.

Oh and you can go here to see the generation schedule, beware though... If it rains a good amount they may change that schedule without notice.

If using Dry I like a Black or Cinnamon Ant. I catch more fishing nymphing using a beaded Olive woolly booger.

Just keep an ear out for open for roaring water. I dang near drowned when they let it out off schedule. I was shocked how fast the water rose.

Definitely pay attention to the water and stay within range of the getthehelloutnow side. Folks at Riverside can help for sure.
