I drove 400 miles up to Louisville Friday afternoon to hunt a wma on the Indiana line. I've got a friend who just moved up there and he was able to check it out and find us some birds. Well, as luck would have it, he was sick Saturday morning. So I went in blind by myself, got lost, got beat to several gates, etc. finally found an open spot and pulled in. At this point it is well after daylight. As I got deeper into the land, I started hearing birds in the distance. I probably heard 10-12, but they would gobble for. 5 minutes then stop about the time I would head towards them. Then another would start and so on. Ran me ragged until I finally got on a group of birds that kept gobbling. They came in on a string and turned out to be 4 jakes. Let them walk off, then started covering some ground. Struck a bird about 11 and he was on fire. Gobbled non stop, til he got into a big cornfield a little ways over the property line. I had him, another strutter and a bunch of hens at 100yds for the longest time but they wouldn't cooperate. Finally just left him. Never got on another bird, and headed back to Louisville about 3pm. Decided to try our luck at some trout and caught a mess for dinner. This morning we went back into an area where I heard several yesterday and thought they were roosted. As the woods came alive birds were gobbling everywhere . Just none close to us. I finally decided to hoot and bam, 4-6 birds gobbled on the ridge we were standing on. It was game on at that point. It was a glorious morning and the good lord blessed us with 15-20 birds gobbling within hearing distance. Haven't heard that many birds in a long time. We setup about 100yds from these two and played chess with them for 45 minutes or so, but they were hanging up just down the bench from us. Without knowing the terrain, decided my best option was to move on them. After moving around, I cut to see exactly where they were and they about blew our hats off. One more cluck and a minute or two later, a strutter popped up over the top. Right behind him another stuck his head about 10" above the edge. They froze looking for the hen, so I told my buddy to take the strutter. Started counting to 3 and the son of a gun shot at about 1.5 lol. Apperently he couldn't hear me counting. Luckily I managed to smack the other one right as he ducked below the ridge. Both birds were solid 3 year olds, his weighed a few pounds more but mine ended up having a double beard. Heck of an exciting trip after the crappy season here in bama, and I was able to add another state to the public land kill list.

I've been trying to talk myself out of going to KY this year. Y'all are making that very difficult.
