After the skull thread, let's hear about some of your excavations. Weird, unusual, lots of artifacts?

The best stuff is always found in the lab and it usually looks like some squiggly line graph that tells a story. But I always get excited when I find a good site that is not disturbed so I can carefully excavate it and put together a good picture of what life was like a long time ago. I have found some really neat individual things, but in the big picture they are just things and only a part of the overall story. When you spend an entire hot Summer digging something like this by hand its very rewarding to be able to put together the story of what life was like back then. Finding artifacts in-situ and exactly how they were left 2500 years ago is always cool. That is when this site and point date to.

What's the deal with the vertical walls and right angles. Why the tape and plumb bob?

Is this to keep from disturbing things before you reach them so you find them exactly " as is" ?

The entire site is on a grid, we dig on the grid in squares so we can keep up with where everything comes from. Those guys are mapping in the things we find.

What if the guy was running from the cops back then and just threw the arrowhead out the window. grin

I was just about to post asking to see some of the stuff that Skinny has found after reading the skull thread also. I used to "arrowhead hunt" with my dad when I was young and we (mainly he) had bucket fulls of what we called back in the 1970's flint and pottery. He passed away a couple of months ago and it has for some reason raised my interest in trying to get involved in this again.
I would love to see some pictures of the things that you have found. I'm sure that others would love seeing them also.

If any of y'all are ever on the campus of Troy University you need to go and see Skinny 's lab. It's unbelievable and he can tell you the story behind each piece. The university just needs to get him a bigger tool shed.

Yep. I had the honor of looking at a lot of his artifacts last summer when we were in Troy.
