I know there are lots of travelers on aldeer. I gotta come home from Carrollton, MO, which is just north of I-70 and not too far east of Kansas City. All the map programs tell me to go thru St. Louis. I did that once and vowed never, ever again.
So what is the best detour of that hades hole? I can go thru Memphis or Nashville; really doesn't matter as long as I can avoid St. Louis. I also would just as soon not even drive thru IL with guns in the truck.
There are several roads I could take, but no interstates. Somebody tell me the best route. Thanks for any help!

PCP, do yourself a favor and swing through East St. Louis and visit Cahokia. An hour there visiting the museum and seeing the mounds is worth it.

Just take 64 east straight through St. Louis, it really aint that bad brother, fastest way for you to get home. Traffic flows at a relatively high rate of speed, ive been through there many times. Not sure which road would be the best to get over to st louis, but after your there hop on 64 east all the way till 57 south, and take 57 to 24 east. Take 24 to nashville and either stay on 24 or hop on 65 south, depends on where you live at in this wonderful state. Youll be home in 10-14 hours Seriously aint that bad on 64, thats the easiest road through it, I would avoid 70 like the plauge

I-70E to I-64E to I-270 bypass south to I-55 south. I-55 to Memphis, then pick up I-240E bypass to Hwy 78 (corridor 22) to Bham.
That's IF you want to avoid St. Louis, as well as Illinois altogether.
If you take Skinny's advice and "visit" East St. Louis, you might need those guns.

We are going through St. Louis right now in a driving rain storm. Traffic is moving along really good though. We just go I-70 right through to I-64 to I-24 through Nashville to I-65 south.

Hunterbuck has it nailed. I just came that way out of Iowa, on 55 now. Been drooling over black-dirt fields and turkeys.

If you take Skinny's advice and "visit" East St. Louis, you might need those guns. That was the way I wanted to go the one time I went thru it, but 64 was closed for work. I had to go right thru downtown in the worst rain I've ever been in and those people are crazy. I just had to find a bathroom, so I pulled off at an exit. Tried 3 different service stations, all had the attendants protected by bars, and none of them even had a bathroom. I finally just ducked behind a big garbage bin; don't think anyone paid any attention to me. Thanks for all the advice. Skinny, it sounds interesting, but I'll be on a tight schedule. IL doesn't recognize an AL CC permit. If I take a pistol and get stopped, I'm sure I'll be arrested. I think I'd like to avoid IL and St. Louis. I was even thinking of taking one of the country roads thru MO to avoid even getting close to it.

800 years ago East St.Louis (Cahokia) was the biggest city north of the Rio Grande. It really is an impressive site to see.

Been back and forth several times on hunting trips and vacations and always went through St. Louis till last year. The Ferguson thing was at it's ugliest when we were going last year and we decided to try a different route because we didn't want to make national news with four Alabama boys stacking up bodies around a Dodge Ram if we broke down up there. I figure we could have done pretty well with 6 or seven rifles including two AR's. The route we ended up taking is supposed to take longer but it was at least an Hr. faster than through St. Louis and not nearly the chance of being slowed down by traffic or riots. The Mts. of Arkansas are very nice and Mammoth Springs is a place I want to go to for a few days. Here is the route.........

Thanks for the route, Bill! Looks like its the same detour around St. Louis that Hunterbuck gave me, except you are cutting off I55 before you get to Memphis and then hitting 65 in Cullman. Isn't that non-interstate section slower than going on to Memphis?

Well that exact route isn't actually what we took. We were going to Jasper and did go through Memphis and down I22. I have come down the route I posted though and it was pretty good. After further review, I think it would be faster to come through Memphis.
