huntin the big lease
the turkeys that were part of the original population in the state and the ones that were transplanted here. the short leg is what I've always heard the ol timers call a Crenshaw county bronze because of the color phase they all have... I've never killed one at my main camp that weighed over 17 1/2 lbs. the biggest turkey I've ever killed on it was the lightest bird I've ever killed.. 15.25 lbs... anybody else ever noticed a difference in leg length and just overall size difference?

I've heard similar stories regarding the turkeys in Coosa Co. Not sure if I believe it or not; it could just be the normal variations in size that any species is gonna show.

One of the oldest gobblers I ever killed weighed 14 pounds, but spurs were very long and curved, and he was on public land and had a "reputation". But I also killed an old bird in Perry Co that weighed just 15, and I think he was just a normal turkey on the way down.

I haven't noticed any gobblers turning down a hen because she is from a more recent stocking, so I doubt that there really is much difference in AL turkeys, other what is just normal from one individual to the next. I could be wrong. Definitely a big difference in the leg length of those 2!

Monroe county definitely appears to have two strains, haha, a small bird and a bigger bird. I've heard the smaller birds called Mossy Heads, down here. Like ya'll I've seen old turkeys that would weigh 13-14# early in the season. May be natural variation.

A little different but not as much as yours. And I'm pretty sure some of our transplant birds came from your neck of the woods about 40 years ago. I think they are like people, some short some tall. But on the same note. In WV we have 2 different whitetail. 1 short and stocky with a really red/ brown color and 1 long, sleak, and gray.

The bronze color phase turkeys that I've killed have always been smaller in size.

Sorry for highjacking the thread but I came across something similar. I have done most of my hunting in Henry county but killed one this year in Macon county. Seemed like his fan was a little smaller than the ones I have killed so I compared it to another one I had killed.

Width of fans were 25" and 28". Couldn't really tell about the height but there was probably a 1 1/2 inch difference.

Both of these birds had around 1+ inch spurs that I estimated to be going on 3 years. This might be common but I just noticed this recently!
