With the deadline nearing I took the time today to review and print my taxes, well when they came out of the printer I thought that there was error because Turbo Tax had printed them on a 1040EZ form. I usually do a 1040A and itemize my deductions, did so for this season. The software informed me that the standard deduction for a single person was 6200.00 and was better than my itemized list so I took the standard, now get this, when the 1040EZ printed it showed a standard deduction of 10,150.00. I thought there has to be an error so I did my taxes again, nope, it was still spitting out the same. Went to the IRS website and printed out the 1040EZ and it has a standard deduction of 10,150.00. My GF, who makes roughly 25,000.00 annually used the same software and it printed her a 1040A, it also did not giver her the 10,150.00 deduction, instead it gave her a 6,200.00 deduction. I am thinking that there is something wrong with the Turbo Tax Software. Why would it not automatically default to the 1040EZ form for someone having less than 6,200.00 in deductions? I am going to write them a letter and question why this is.

Let us know what you find out. I'll be printing mine out on the 14th and will check to see what mine says.

I quit using turbo when it imported the wrong year's w2's on federal but did state right. I had to pay 1400 to correct it at IRS.

Not trying to be critical here, but if you're filing 1040EZ, you should probably not waste your money on TurboTax--just print out the forms and instructions from irs.gov and mail your return in.
Now as to the software giving y'all different answers on the deductions----hmmmmmm. That's weird.

That is what I use to do and I agree on not wasting money but when I bought my house I figured it would be better to use the long forms, I had also got into investing. Going forward I doubt I will use it again. It does make preparation of the state tax forms easier and there is also the ability to file electronically which I never do, just don't trust it.

Been using turbo tax for years. Love it.
If you’re a common sense person, you probably don’t feel you have a home in this world right now. If you’re a Christian, you know you were never meant to.

I'd bet they've paid up less than .001% on any errors.
not sure what the best way to handle them is but they shouldnt be on tv and gettn married and raisin kids

That is your standard deduction $6,200 + Personal Exemption $3,950 = $10,150 If I am reading the Tax rules correctly then both me and the GF qualify for the standard deduction and personal exemption, the problem is that when she did her taxes TT did not automatically give her the same deductions. She has already filed so we sat down yesterday and manually did a 1040EZ and if TT had done it correctly she would have received an additional 300.00 on her return. I still want to chat with someone at Intuit regarding this issue.

I'm sure TT has errors or bugs but I doubt they are in the calculation of tax from Taxable Income. However, I am not an advocate of TT and suggest everyone go visit their local accountant! Sorry, just seen where you initial post mentioned a rough estimate of her income, that wouldn't have put her in the 25% bracket. If it did not calculate her personal exemption it is somehow assuming she was a dependent of another indicidual. Maybe last year she was in school and listed as a dependent of her parents.
