The wife and I have rented a house on Mobile Bay in Fairhope for a few days in early may. Those of you that frequent the area ... I'm looking for ideas for good things to do, good places to eat ... What say you?

Thanks,
Paul

The new Sunset Point on Fly Creek is good. The Wash House never disappoints, we have a new Seafood Steamer Restaurant downtown and Master Joes for Sushi. Let me know when you head this way!

Here's a pic off the dock in the back of the house we rented.

Is it worth trying to fish off a dock like this or should I go somewhere else?

Should be some decent flounder fishing around that dock and possibly some reds and specks.

Cool, What kind of bait and tackle would you use?

Small spinning outfit (or bass tackle) with live shrimp or fresh dead shrimp, Berkley gulp baits, DOA baits, etc

If they have a light out there you can usually catch specks at night. Mostly croaker, hard heads, ground mullet, some small reds. No telling though, I have caught small sharks off piers like that. Where is it, point clear, mullet point, down towards weeks bay? Get a crab trap too.

IF you go to Gulf Shores (I wouldnt, Spring Break in full effect) I like Papa Rocco's for lunch or supper and Kitty's Cafe for breakfast or lunch. PR is on the west side of the road 1/4 mile before the road splits at the Hangout. Kitty's is in the shopping center where Target (and some movie theater?) is about 1 mile N of The Track (go cart and arcade and bungee deal just N of Intercoastal Waterway).

For things in Fairhope I would defer to 270WSM's expertise. He's local (as is Rick4AU).

You'll be about 2.5 miles from Weeks Bay

Ok, did some googling ... I'm a fresh water fisherman from North AL, not familiar with your type of fishing

Reds=Redfish=Red Drum ... probably not good to eat but fun to catch
Specks=Crappie ... Excellent to eat
Crabs=Blue crabs ... Excellent to eat
Flounder ... Excellent to eat

No?

Reds can be good to eat (blackened redfish), provided they aren't too big

The others, you have correct

That will be a real quiet area. Just remember there is nothing down there as far as stores. You have a 15, 20 minute drive to the gas station or nearest restaurant and there are no fast food places near there. There is a pretty decent bait and tackle store up on 98 near the gas station at the 4 way stop.

Jessie' s in Magnolia Springs, the Wash House in Point Clear and the Tin Top in Bon Secour. If you love dives go to Moes BBQ in Daphne and get the smoked wings. Dangit man it's so good!

Reds=Redfish=Red Drum ... good to eat. Filet like a bass or walleye and leave scales on filet. Place scale side down on grill and season to taste(add butter to top of filet).
Specks=Crappie ... good fried or grilled, but not as good as crappie.
Crabs=Blue crabs ... Excellent to eat, BUT will need a bunch of them....
Flounder ... Excellent to eat - best of the three mentioned and my favorite fish from the bay.

No?

Fixed it for you. Have a safe trip.

Gator Alley near I-10 is pretty cool. Wife and I walked down there the other day. Free and you can see a few alligators. You can google it and get directions from where you're staying.
