If you can measure the batspeed (radar gun, Setpro equipment, etc.) then experiment with different weights and lengths and you will find a range of 3-5 ounces where you have good bat speed. Heavier, the speed drops too much, lighter, no appreciable gain. Hitters should use bats in the upper end of the good range, then maybe drop an ounce for a particularly fast pitcher or if not feeling 100%. Lighter isn't better. Too heavy is death. Too light is counterproductive
I love the rut. The woods are like a bunch of roided up meatheads fighting over a girl.

28" is way to big for 95% of 6 yr olds. Bats that are too long or too heavy lead to bad swing mechanics. Bad swing mechanics are a muscle memory issue that starts the first time the kid picks up a bat. Older they get, the harder it is to correct. I would not worry about how far a six year old hits it. I'd concentrate on making sure he was using the proper grip, stance, hand position, tall on the backside, keeping front shoulder closed, short to it and long through it, staying over and rotating through the ball. Concentrate your efforts here and the results will follow. Basic rule of thumb is have him stand up straight with his hands by his side. measure from the floor to the joint in his wrist. That will get you in the ballpark. Will probably be a 25 or 26" bat. -10 or -12 is totally dependent on how strong he is.

"Most" 6 year olds are going to be in the 12-15oz range. The 28-29" bat is also likely too long. I've got one 6 year old that swings a 25/13 and one that swings a 29/19 so there are obvious broad ends of the spectrum but 95% of them are probably going to fit a 25-26" bat and 13-15oz. Work on the fundamentals first. They are much easier taught correctly the first time than retaught later on.
Ya'll are just overthinking it now

He used a 27/17 during the fall and did pretty good with it. He hit his coach in the forehead with the ball. So he had decent speed off the bat. It just gets aggravating buying a bat. When you drop $100-$200 on bats, you really try to get it right. But on the other side of that, you try to get a few years out of the bat. Thanks.

At these young ages, you might have 2 or 3 bat sizes a year. Too heavy and too long will cause bad mechanics. You've gotten some good advice. Good Luck with your season and make it fun.

My youngest son plays on a pretty good travel ball team. They are all 9 year olds and most of them are swinging 28/18s. I can think of only one that's got a 29, and personally, I think it's too much. I don't know of any 6 year olds that can handle a 28. CD. Ya want the kid to swing the bat, not the bat swing the kid.

I've always heard that you let him grab the bat at the end and hold it horizontal straight out in front of him, if he can't hold it for 10 seconds it's to heavy.

Dear God in heaven above, However did DiMaggio, Ruth, Cobb, Aaron, Rose, Carew, etc. ....ever manage to learn to hit without a hot bat? And why do most successful HS and college program do most BP with a "wooden" bat? And how were they ever discovered by a scout without playing 8 year old travel ball? And when will Mizuno come out with a bat so hot a kid can swing it one handed and bust the hill at Williamsport?
Thanks, Jay What does this have to do with his question about bat size? I would go with a 26 if my son was thst size. I fact, that is what he used at that size.

He's 6....don't put a lot of thought into it. Go to walmart and buy him a $20 easton that is 27/14 and be done with it. Make sure he swings level and you should be ok for his first year.
I had much rather be tried by twelve than carried to my grave by six!!!!

The cheaper bats that are more than -12 will dent when hitting a pitched ball vs a stationary one on a tee.
