Definitely science behind it. I had an old timer show me how to do it with two pieces of copper wire bent at right angles. I've used it to locate underground water lines several times.

I had to find the waterline at the church under the drive way, used a wire hanger and it worked. Never would have believed it if I hadn't been the one doing it.

Yep, I've done it before. I used to work for a underground utility locating company and an old timer showed me how to do it. I was amazed when we marked the location of a water main using that method and then used the locating equipment to verify.

I thought it was an old wives tale, but after I saw it work i changed my mind. I have found a couple water lines with bent coat hangers.
The only thing i can think of is maybe it has to do with the minerals in water. Who knows.

No talent needed. Bend two wires at right angles. Both legs need to be fairly long so that you can hold the vertical leg and let the horizontal leg project in front of you. Hold them very loosely in your hand so they can spin. You don't turn them, you just hold them. As you walk slowly through the yard, as you approach a water line, they will start to turn toward each other. When you are over the water line, they will turn directly toward each other.

I had someone teach me how to do it with a forked peach limb. I made him find my water line to prove it works, I knew where it was. I tried it and sure enough it felt like something was pulling that peach limb to the ground. ThAts how he found his well that he had drilled.

I have done it with wire and dogwood limbs both. It works.

Like the others, I've seen it done with uncanny accuracy!! They found a waterline in a location that we were all sure it could not have been run.

Some things can't be explained and this is one of them. I have done it several times and have always found great streams of water. My cousin drilled wells and the first thing he did was take a forked stick and find where to drill. It is a funny feeling when the forked stick pulls to the ground.
I can't stand a thief.
