This one started life as a standard M77 red pad tanger in .270 Win, with the wood stock and glossy blueing, and a stiff trigger.. It would shoot small groups, but they shifted around with the weather. Solution was to bead blast the metal, then do something (can't remember what) to make it flat black. Had the trigger worked, then put it all in a stiff Bell & Carlson stock, glass bedded and free floated. The final mod was a result of an accident involving a plugged barrel that bulged. Had to chop off about 2.5 inches and recrown. Here is what it looks like now: And here is how it shoots:

My old skeleton stock 308 - only pic I have now. And it has never been a shooter, 1 inch on it's best day, 1 1/2 normal day - but has killed a truck load of deer! I had that gun in 300 Win Mag., thing kicked worse than any gun I've ever owned. Sold that sucker.

Yea, those zytel stocks are famous for being able to transfer most of the recoil to the shooters shoulder! I have toyed with the idea of dropping it in a hogue overmold or boyds stock of some sort.

Not quite in the same vein as y’all’s but this is only Ruger I currently own. I do plan to own a .270 or compact .308 someday. If Burbank gets ready to move that .270, I want dibs. I do have to get my Ruger plinker out and get after squirrels soon. Probably going to take the recurve bow and the Ruger and just have a “fun morning” one day. Soon.

30-06, Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40, Viking Tactical sling. The first gun I ever bought. I put it on layaway while I was bagging groceries at Bruno's a long time ago. [img:left] Untitled by bambam32, on Flickr[/img]

AC870, I had a M77 Compact in 308 and that gun stomped my ass something serious.
I'm not Mr. HeMan but ya wow that thing was rough. Thanks for the tip. I had a M77 Frontier in 7mm-08 that I enjoyed a lot and killed several deer with. I traded it and probably should have kept it. It was very heavy for its length though. I’ve owned a couple Ruger American Compacts in .308. They had a bit of recoil but not turrible. I think the .308 may be greatest deer caliber ever.

That gun was very heavy, but it would drive NAILS. I wish I would have kept it. AC870, I had a M77 Compact in 308 and that gun stomped my ass something serious.

[img:left] Untitled by bambam32, on Flickr[/img] So what in the world was Ruger thinking with the high polish barrels on these stainless guns? One of the first times I hunted with mine I got busted by some deer a pretty long way off and couldn't figure out how. Was telling my hunting buddy about it and started laughing, he could see the shine off my barrel from the other side of the cutover. I promptly went and bought some cheap camo tape and put on it. My son keeps telling me to get it cera coated or black ice coated, but I'm kinda old school and think of it as messing up a classic.

I always use the non-sticky camo wrap to prevent it from looking like a signaling mirror. I usually get about two years out of it before it needs replacing.

Never owned a ruger center fire that would hold up to my accuracy requirements and that is why I don't have any today, only a couple 10/22.
