Well, this year I set out to get my son, 8, his first deer. We went numerous times but never saw any. Last Saturday, i hunted a field that has been labeled buck only and hadn't been hunted much. I hunted by myself cause we had an attitude problem and lost hunting privileges. Well of course I see 2 does and he could have got a shot off if he was there. Went home and told him how much I hated he wasn't with me and he missed an opportunity. So, attitude straightens up and he wants to hunt there the next weekend. This last weekend of season, we kinda threw the rules out the window and said if you want to shoot it go for it. So it started Friday afternoon after a late afternoon dentist appointment. We rush to the club to get a quick hunt in, walkng in we jump a deer and that gets him excited. Get set up in the field a little after 4:30. Right as I was about to say lets go, i see a deer 30 yards in front of us but Austin can't see it behind a tree. I thought it would take a couple of steps and clear the tree but nope, starts to get real dark and i crane me neck up and out to see where the deer is and she sees me, blows and takes off. We gather our stuff and jump 3 more deer on the way out. Austin is all excited and wants to hunt there in the morning. We get there before daylight, listen to some turkeys wake up, and watch the grass grow. No deer. This afternoon, get set up about 3:30. About 5:15 i catch movement in the field on the left side. I see deer. Tell him to get ready but he can't see the deer because of the tree. She finally works her way out and he sees her!!! He gets on her and I tell him put it right on her shoulder and squeeze the trigger. BOOM!! The deer turns and bolts back to the left, the second doe runs to the end of the field and stops. I get her in my crosshairs and BOOM!! I see my deer bulldozing, cut a flip, and die in the edge of the field. We chat for a few minutes then start looking. No blood where he shot. Walk down in the woods and find several tufts of long white hair with some brown mixed in but no blood. Looks like he shaved her. Drats!! We walk to the edge of the woods to get my deer(i can see her laying there) and I show him the MASSIVE blood trail and he follows it about 30 yards and finds my deer. He then says "Daddy, I sure am glad you got yours!!!" He then proceeds to tell me if that doe shows up again next year, he is gonna get revenge on her!!! That was the only deer I killed all season, it didn't have a massive rack(or a rack at all), but THAT was an awesome deer!! Gonna work on his shooting for next year and see if we can't seal the deal!!!

You didn't tell me you shot one too! Way to go. I'm glad Austin kept a good outlook about it. He'll get him one.
