Do Yeti coolers use a special type of insulation or just thicker?

This is what I am referring to when I say special.

I don't have one (although would love to have one) and haven't a clue as to the answer.

But while at Gander Mountain recently - they had their brand sitting next to the Yeti. They looked a lot alike, but if I had to choose - I'd have chosen the Yeti even if it costs more because of the front latching system. The Yeti was easier to "close/lock" while both seemed to create a very good seals.

I would think the insulation in both would be more dense and the way they seal would be the primary reasons why they retain their temperature so well - but that is just speculation.

I dont have one but a few people i know do and i saw a guy put two bags in his coleman the one that says it holds ice for five days and at the same time my other buddy put one bag in his yeti and the coleman still had ice in it after the yeti melted. the coleman was also twice the size of the yeti and i was thinking about buying a yeti till i saw that but i will say the latching system is much better on the yeti and it looks to be able to take alot more abuse. i dont own either so i dont have a dog in the fight. i still have a couple old school igloo big white cooler that serve my needs.

You can't compare the two like that you've got to get the temp down inside the yeti. They are so thick they will hold the heat if the coolers already hot so they atleast need to be kept inside with the lid open the night before you plan on using it. Even better if you can put it in a deep freeze the brig the temp down and chill it.

My little yeti will hold ice for 4 days if I leave it in the house before I put ice in it. 2 days if it's been in the back of my jeep in the summer sun. It will hold cold water and slush for another day or two after that. The biggest thing about. Yeti type cooler is that they are so well made they will last a loooong time

We will burn that bridge when we get there

. This^^ another good way to " precool" is to freeze some old milk jugs full of water, then put in the night before. I have a pelican and it holds a ton of heat if this isn't done.

Spending $300 on a cooler seems crazy to me.
20 lbs of ice is $1.50. If mine melts, I'll buy some more

So after I spend $400 on a cooler I have to sick that cooler in another cooler to get it cool before I can put ice in the $400 cooler or it doesn't work worth a chit?

Do not buy an Icey Tek. they are junk. The lids are warped from the factory and do not seal on the ends where the handles are. I have had all types of coolers over the years and yes even a Yeti. None will hold ice if you use them daily or do not drain the water off daily.

Not exactly. It helps tremendously if the cooler hasn't been sitting in the hot summer sun for 5 days before you throw ice in it. It's kinda like a house. Your house is insulated to help keep it cool but if you go a week without running your a/c with outside temps 90-100 degrees, your a/c is going to work its arse off to get it down to a desired temp. Without insulation your a/c would run non stop.

I know what you are talking about now. i think they were both hot when they put ice in them. so the coleman would cool off quicker since its a lighter weight cooler.

How much will a yeti cost when SHTF and the grid is down so there's no deep freezers to pre cool the cooler???

You bunch of ADHD rednecks.... Not one person has answered my question.

Does it have special proprietary insulation or is it just a better box with thicker insulation?

It's just polyurethane foam. I'm not sure if it's special, but it just has way more insulation than regular Coleman coolers. That's half the appeal, the other half is the whole roto-molded material that the cooler is made of. Very tough material, can't compare to a Coleman in any way. And if you hunt where we do, and the closest gas station is closed on the weekends half the time, the nearest place with ice can be 30 minutes away. Ice is definitely cheap, but fuel isn't.

I cooled my Yeti off with a few frozen water bottles before a recent trip. I had to pack the cooler on Monday night because I was leaving after work on Tuesday. I had two frozen gallon jugs and 3-4 frozen water bottles in it with all my groceries for a 4 night camp. The water bottles and gallon jugs were still half froze when I got home on Sunday.

I don't know what kind of foam it is but it works as advertised. If you're looking for a beer cooler or have easy access to ice, you don't need a Yeti. There are cheaper options.

That's just a good suggestion. You can throw a extra bag in there, or some frozen water bottles..

Mine works quite well and isn't warped.
