New to here and new to turkey hunting, and somehow think I'm already hooked. Just the preparation to get ready for my first season has been very, very enjoyable. This forum has been invaluable so far, and I'm excited to be a member a of such a cool community of folks.

About to place an order for a Fatal Attraxion glass pot after hearing so many good things about them. Might take me a while to get the hang of it, but that's ok. My question is this: I fooled around with a Southland slate call this past weekend at Sportsman's Outpost and it sounded pretty good so should I pick up that one? Or would the Fatal Attaxion be just as easy to pick up? Guess I'm leaning toward the Southland since I have experience with it, but I'm intrigued by the FA. Any and all opinions appreciated.

Btw, ordered up a Hustlin Hen yesterday after I finally got through after about 10 days of calling. Super excited about this one!

JMO here, but if I have handled a call and really like it, I will usually buy it rather than ordering one. However, you're talking about apples and oranges when you're dealing with glass/crystal versus slate. Most folks use a slate for more subtle calling (softer yelps, purrs, clucks) while the glass is usually used for mid/longer range calling (yelps, cutting, normal to loud volume). I personally carry a slate, crystal, and aluminum pot call in my vest - though there's not a whole lot of difference between the aluminum and the crystal. FA is a really good brand - and I wouldn't think you'd have trouble learning to run anything he makes.

all pot calls are pretty easy to use. I have about 25 of them and generally carry 3 or so in my belt. I am partial to glass and have tried and have a bunch but the FA glass call is the best I have heard. you wont be disappointed.

I need a good slate call, mine is some cheapo knight and hale with an adjustable volume. I also have a Woodhaven crystal one that a friend gave me. I seem to get sounds easier with the slate. Not sure if it is just me or if one is easier than the other. Granted, the crystal is newer to me.

Glass could be difficult to learn on, not trying to tell you to get something else but there are easier ones to run. Knight and hale makes a slatek surface thats a great beginner call. Its yellow in color and used to be called ol yeller. One you get it down pat, get a glass or whatever you want. Cheap calls that I killed alot of turkeys with. Very trippy type surface with less squeaks and slips. Not critical to keep it sanded at all.

Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers..........

There's one of your keys to good pot performance... keep the surface conditioned properly. You can have the best pot call made in the world, but if you don't keep it conditioned right, it will sound horrible.

Definitely can't go wrong with anything that Stony makes. I tend to use glass more now than anything else, but I have a slate that the turkeys seem to love and it was one of my first. It's very easy to use, but I don't think they make it any more. It's a MAD eliminator I think was the name. I've killed a lot of turkeys using that call. I also have a Ben Lee trough call that is super easy and is great for close work.

Thanks for the help guys. I understand glass is a lot more unforgiving, but figured I would go ahead and pick one up. Might not be ready for the woods, but it was to darn pretty not to go ahead and get. Will mainly stick with the Hustlin Hen and whichever slate I end up with. Probably the Southland simply because I know it sounded pretty good.
