JMO here, but if I have handled a call and really like it, I will usually buy it rather than ordering one. However, you're talking about apples and oranges when you're dealing with glass/crystal versus slate. Most folks use a slate for more subtle calling (softer yelps, purrs, clucks) while the glass is usually used for mid/longer range calling (yelps, cutting, normal to loud volume). I personally carry a slate, crystal, and aluminum pot call in my vest - though there's not a whole lot of difference between the aluminum and the crystal. FA is a really good brand - and I wouldn't think you'd have trouble learning to run anything he makes.

I need a good slate call, mine is some cheapo knight and hale with an adjustable volume. I also have a Woodhaven crystal one that a friend gave me. I seem to get sounds easier with the slate. Not sure if it is just me or if one is easier than the other. Granted, the crystal is newer to me.

Glass could be difficult to learn on, not trying to tell you to get something else but there are easier ones to run. Knight and hale makes a slatek surface thats a great beginner call. Its yellow in color and used to be called ol yeller. One you get it down pat, get a glass or whatever you want. Cheap calls that I killed alot of turkeys with. Very trippy type surface with less squeaks and slips. Not critical to keep it sanded at all.

You can have the best pot call made in the world, but if you don't keep it conditioned right, it will sound horrible.
