I live on the stateline and hunt TN also. I just recently got on here, I stay on tndeer.com most of the time. The seasons in AL & TN are a lot different, TN season lengths and buck limits is a topic that gets brought up somehow in every post... Just seeing what you guys think of AL season length and limits, and evidence to back up your opinion...

In my opinion, the season is just timed wrong, we should bowhunt from mid october (like we do now) until mid December, bring the guns out from mid December till mid February.

And make Turkey season start on March 1st and end mid May!

IMO, They should do away with October and add a few weeks in Feb.

I feel the state would have to select counties like they do now to extend it. Yall are far south, and I know how late yalls good hunting starts. AL is a big state, in the northern counties i feel the season is just right.... The whole month of December is the best huntin here, usually over by Xmas round here.

I would like to see rifle season begin the day before Thanksgiving then close a week later(Nov 24-Dec 1). Then have the rifle season come back in the third Saturday of December and run a full week into February (Dec 18-Feb 6), with the last two weeks (Jan 23-Feb 6) of the season being buck only. During the break between Thanksgiving and the third Saturday of December it would be no hunting at all regardless of weapon. A season like this would shorten rifle season(by 15 days) which would decrease hunting pressure, but still preserve the traditional Thanksgiving hunt. It would also allow hunting into the first week of February, a time when some areas are still having the rut.
This type of season would be 57 days of rifle season, with 43 of those being "either sex" days compared to 72 days of rifle season and 72 days of either sex like we have now. Folks still have plenty of hunting time to kill does, whether they want them for the freezer and/or for management purposes. The "buck only" period, last two weeks of the season, would decrease some pressure on the does. As I stated earlier decreasing the hunting pressure and allow hunting during the entire rut would make the hunting in all areas of Alabama more enjoyable and rewarding for all, in my humble opinion.
IF I could design my own season for the area I hunt this would be it. I'm sure a lot of folks will disagree and I do understand we all have an opionion. This is just mine.

I agree with whitecity. We here in Alabama are very fortunate to have the lengthy season that we have with the bag limits in place but I don't understand why we can't hunt the full rut. Could someone please explain it to me.

The state needs to give you guys in the southern part a longer season. Or open it later, but keep the length. Maybe Nov.1st- Feb.15th.....?? Maybe divide the state in 3 units, and set seasons for each...

It isn't timed wrong, our calendar is wrong.
We've miscalculated the actual length of a year.
By using leap years, over the centuries, our months have lapped our seasonal climate changes.
This slight miscalculation, multiplied by the centuries, has given us summer weather in December and caused our deer rut in the spring.

My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

No, the season is not too long.

If you get tired of hunting, don't go. It's not mandatory.

If you like the way TN does it better, go there.

Don't forget changing the clocks back and forth! That certainly doesn't help!

How about if Alabama season stays like it is and if you want to hunt rutting deer in February, hunt NW Florida? Unless of course if the rut stops at the State line. wink Kind of like if you want to hunt deer in velvet in August you go to South Carolina or Montana. Just a thought.

I wonder why that didn't happen next door in Georgia?

Personally I'd like a longer season, I sometimes miss weeks at a time & it'd be nice to hunt the rut when it gets all goofy, 49er's right on this, it's not mandatory to be there every day the woods are open!
I know guys that would probably wind up divorced if season was year-round, they just can't "not be there" if it's legal, usually the same guys that need to ground-check every set of antlers they see.
