Wondering what y'all think. I don't hunt without a call and always do it the same; blow softly once, twice, or three times. One second bursts. Every 15 or 20 minutes. Doe grunt only. Along with and before this I drag some doe pee in from about 50 yds downwind and hang it in the spot where I hope to shoot into. When they hear the call and look for but do not see a deer they usually circle down wind and come up feeling purdy comfortable at least getting a wiff of my dragged scent. Hunting mostly public land this method consistently brings them in. Sometimes not always in to a point of getting a shot, but the excitement is always hot and heavy. __________________ \\\"Dustonthebottle"///

I never hunt without two grunt tubes. I should have taken Troys advise but I had to learn the hard way, when I got settled in 30' up and reach for my call and the only thing there was the wooden mouth piece. The lower part was laying on the ground. I probably have 6 or 7 grunts but my go to is a rod benson( thanks 2dogs).

IF the wind is consistant try dragging, placing scent to one side slightly so it's not directly downwind of you. Do both sides this way. As to grunting if I grunt at a buck 2-3 times and he continues on I STOP grunting. Continued grunting will likely spook him. Then I will let him walk a ways and lightly rattle at him. This is bowhunting. Gun hunting I just shoot his arse....

I got the story on them, Rod quit making them about 6-8 years ago. That's why they were impossible to find. A young friend of his bought him out and has started making them again to exact specs. Only place I found them was a place called Red Sky Outfitters on the web. I had one about 25 years and wore it out , it caused several dandy bucks get a load of hot lead over the years. Just got 2 new ones a couple months ago.

I rarely blind grunt. But if I'm rattling I'll give a few toots as well. I usually do it like Troy said to turn a buck that's not coming on a path that offers a good shot. This has worked for me many times, but is not 100%.

If you've had it less than 2 years it's the new guy. Rod always made both wood and plastic, so is the new guy. My understanding is the new guy changed nothing, he didn't need to! I think they are even made with the same equipment. My first one was an all plastic so that's what I went back with. I understand he makes some fine turkey calls as well.

I use Primos hands free. Don't think the deer care if it's a deep sound or another sound that really appeals to us humans. When I hear deer sounding off in the woods they just sound ok to my ears. Just a basic cheap doe grunt call can bring um in just as good or better than a high dollar call, if used properly and with the right timing. AND, can work from beginning to the end of season.
