Now don't say that a bullet coming out of a 7 mag ain't expanding when it goes through a deer, some dumbass redneck will laugh you off the board like they tried to do me last year. The best advice I can give you is sell that worthless for deer hunting, elk gun that someone sold you and go get a 308, 30-06, 270, 280, 300 mag, 243, 30-30, 35 whelen, 45-70, 7mm 08, anything other than a 7 mag. I love you buddy but WOW, that's BS. Never lost a deer with mine. The ones that did move went 50 yards max. I shoot lungs though, Im practical like that. My "deer won't die story" is centered around a 7 mag. Long story short, I carried 8 bullets, hit the deer with 5 of them, the story ends with me drowning the deer in a beaver pond because I didn't have any more bullets left. Don't call bs on me foot sniffer.

I have killed plenty with my 30-06. Since I went through puberty I don't feel the need to extend my manhood by having the biggest rifle in the woods.

Thanks for all the input. Keep it coming. Sounds like I should consider different ammo, and/or make sure I take that front shoulder out with these close range shots. I hope something works, because my confidence is gone in this gun for now...lol..I even caught my self looking at .270's last night, but who knows, I could have the same issue with it as well.... Well since you said it... I think the 7mm mag round is a good enough round, but is way over kill for deer. The problem is most and I say MOST ppl dont shoot a magnum round well. Recoil and muzzle blast make for a flinch. This translates to poor accuracy and thus lost animals. You said good shot placement, so that would be ruled out in your case. IMHO, i have found that a well constructed bonded bullet is needed for magnum velocities at close range. Ballistic tip type bullets will and do sometimes explode at close range. They shine at longer ranges because they have lost that extra velocity. With standard rounds like the 7mm08, 308 and 270 recoil and muzzle blast are much less and therefore far more comfortable to shoot. This increased confidence, accuracy, and clean kills with little or no tracking. It also seems to me that a wider range of bullet construction types work well in these rounds. I have seen several ppl go from magnum rounds to a lighter round with much better results. May or may not apply to you and your situation, but this is very ??good info here. And I agree 100%. The reason I put the 7mag down was I got tired of the after effects of the shot. Sure its fast and long no doubt but I have much more confidence now with this 308. If you lose your confidence in what your shooting for what ever reason then its time for a change. I lost mine because it hurt like hell after I pulled the trigger.

I shot a 7 mag for years and had a lot of the same problems. What I found was that the 7mag was way to fast at close range for normal bullets. At longer ranges it would put the spank on them but up close and tight I would loose deer or not get the performance I wanted. I actually shot a spike at 15yds and honestly didn't get more than 2-3"s of penetration. The wound was bigger than a pie plate when I dressed him. All I can think is the shear shock wave is what killed him. The bullet disintegrated. I started shooting 139 Hornady inter bonds and everything changed. The last deer I killed with that gun and load was a 200lb+ buck that I shot at 30yds. Double shoulder shot with the bullet lodged in the opposite hide. He stumbled for 10yds before falling over. Still don't know what held him up so long;) anyway, fast bullets at close range have to be GOOD bonded, etc bullets for them to work right. So either shoot better bullets or get a slower shooting gun for close range hunting. I still have my 7 for cut overs and longer ranges, but my go too all around up close to 300yd gun is my 708

I do find it surprising that a shot just behind the shoulder from my trusty 30/30 was so much more effective at putting deer down compared to this gun at the short distance. Almost every deer I have killed over 10 years has been under 40 yards. But, all it took was that one hunt watching the buck of omy life stand at 250 yards in a cutover, while all I had was ole 30/30.. and I soon became a 7 mag man...lol...then all this crap began... I understand and know the feeling and that's why I have hunted with a 7 for the past 15 years until this year. The longest shot I took at a deer was 175 yards and that was 10 years ago. All others inside that range. Killed a good bit of yotes and wild dogs at 200 plus just because I was mad and had no buck fever shakes.

I don't think you will come up short with any of the flat shooting standard rounds listed above. Sure a 7mm mag has more umph, but put a slug from a 7mm-08 through his lungs at 250 and see if he is any less dead than if shot with any magnum round. Also, I agree with Tc's post about shooting them in the lungs. It is a very practical shot and as deadly as shooting them between the eyes. I have heard the old timers debate this round or that rounds ability to break a big buck down. I have never understood this logic. If you take his lungs out he will die 100% of the time.

Jtide, the differerence is that 99% of 30/30 BULLETS were designed to kill deer sized game, and most do a good job of.
Most 7 mag bullets were designed for larger game and are therefore more strongly built for deeper penetration and bigger bones.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I shot a 7mag for 10 years and killed deer from 10 yards to 335 yards and once I switched from bt to hornady custom 139grain and nosler partitions 140 grain I never lost another deer. The deer I killed at 10 yards was drt and I also killed a big 9 point at 75 yards that was drt. No exit on either deer but I shot them through the front shoulder high and hit bone. I hunt with a 270 now but wouldn't hesitate to hunt with the 7mag if I still had it.
