After the conversation we had awhile back about no till…..I thought I would share the results of my planting experiment this year. I have decided to go complete no-till even though I don’t own a drill.

Here is a brief summary of what I did. Anyone who wants to read more about it can do so here in this thread. It has lots of pics of the whole process…

http://www.qdma.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57057

In short…….I grew a field of grass and milo this summer......

[Linked Image]

Then I sprayed it with gly a couple weeks before planting. I pressed mine before spraying but that step is not necessary if you have a sprayer that can spray over the top of tall grass.

[Linked Image]

Broadcast my mix into the thatch. Mix is cereal rye, oats, crimson clover, diakon radishes, hairy vetch, and a handful of durana clover.

[Linked Image]

Once I broadcast my seed I simply bush hogged as low as I could mow....

Wow. Nice job. I was one of the skeptics. Seems like the thatch would also keep birds out till the seed germinated. Did you add fertilizer?

Thanks guys...... smile

Yes, I did add fertilizer but it was just straight N. My soil tests showed good levels of P&K so I didn't add anymore right now. I'm trying to build up my OM levels at this point so that I'll have some holding capacity for nutrients. I broadcast 100 lbs of 34-0-0 per acre into the hay before planting. The hay will take up a lot of that N in the decomposition process and return it to my future crops and the cereal rye, oats, radishes should mop up the rest if any is left.

CNC, I've read a lot but not all of what you've written and I have a question about applying the technique on a couple of plots here at home.

I planted Milo earlier and it did good. I limed and fertilized when disc'ed for planting the Milo. Just small spots here 2ea 1/2 acre spots.

I bush hogged the milo and the ground is not really hard, but I have a lot more earth than you are showing.

I bought two diffent types of seed mix, the pennington Rackmaster Elite and the high dollar Biolgic perfect Plot mix, Biologix Deer Radish Mix.

What would you guys say, disc before planting, Planting and as light as i can disc to cover seed. Or Disc and sow seed? Or if the ground is not real compacted just let the seed rip, I don't have complete organic's on top of the spots?

What are the main seeds in the first two....Isn't it a lot of small seeded brassicas?

Something I noticed about using this method was that it did the very best in areas like are shown in the pics where I had a nice duff layer of hay. I did this same thing in some other areas where I didn't have all the hay and it did not do nearly as well. The hay made a big difference with the germination of my entire mix.

That being said though....the little seeds like turnips will just about come up anywhere. I'll have to take some pics but something else I did this year was to take 10 lbs of turnip seed, load it in my bag spreader and just walk around my property lightly spreading it into every sunny spot I could find. I wanted to see where all it would come up by just letting seed fly and nothing else. I've now got turnips sprouting EVERYWHERE....They sprouted in leaf litter, underneath patches of dying pokeweed, in trails, underneath oaks, etc..etc...We'll have to see how well they ultimately do in those spots but as far as just germination goes it was a success.

Oh and I might try some of your CNC Johhny turnip seed routine as well.

I think I'm going to try it this year. I sprayed a month or so ago and got a good kill, lots of crabgrass. I'm going to spread the rye, wheat and oats and drag over the top of the dead grass with an old gate a few times and see what happens (get the seed down before the dang turkeys get it). It is suppose to rain a bunch in the next few days, in a couple of weeks I'll put out some Ammo-Nite.

Have planted clover that way several times and it worked great even better than plowing IMO.

Looks good CNC. I've been doing the same thing for the last couple of years after reading about it on the QDMA forum. I've had great success as well. The only difference that I add to my steps is after getting a good kill I will go over the field with a drag harrow to break the soil just a little. As CNC stated the areas that have more thatch seem to do better.

Looks good, CNC! I took your advice and planted a couple of my deer plots using rye instead of wheat. Its nearly twice the cost of wheat, so I wanta see how it does before going all in with it. I planted 9 deer plots and all are up and growing good. I used the standard disc, plant and cover method that I've used for decades.

I did try to get by on some of the pure clover stands with no-till, but I never saw anything come up. I wound up lightly discing them; just enough to scratch the surface a little. This is the way I've been keeping them going for about the last 10 years.

Good luck with your plots, and thanks again for all the pics and posts!

Thanks fellas...I appreciate the comments. smile

Preacher....I found rye in Montgomery for $16.75 a bag. That was the cheapest around. Everywhere else was around $19 or more. You can reduce your seeding rate to help on the cost some especially if you plant it in with a mix. I've seen a lot of posts where people plant it as low as 30-50 lbs per acre in a mix.

CNC - What is the "gly" you mentioned as the killer you used on the standing plants?

We're doing the same thing this year, but with a slight adjustments. Broadcast the seeds (wheat, oat, rye, pease, clover, turnips) & the fertilizer into the standing plant matter, then bush hogged everything. After 7 days, almost every area has 1" fresh growth coming up thru the thatch. Looking for somerain this next week to help with the growth but I really like the idea of using the existing plant matter on the ground as a moisture retaining substance. We'll see how it all shakes out.
