I am humble....I'm far from the best and I'm sure many of you are way better callers and hunters.....I've not bragged once! All I have said is if I never kill another one I've killed my share and in order to get good footage you have to be willing to let let turkeys go.....and I've killed enough to be willing to do that....that's my opinion and how I feel....that's not bragging or boasting

MY friend Preacher actually touches em before he calls to them then calls them AWAY from him so they don't get too many pellets in the breast and he's killed 4 or 500 shocked

That's because you are using 9s. Switch to 8s and you will get some blood. Switch to 7s and it will be like a deer kill.

I am now the proud owner of a pound and a half of TSS 4's. I figure an ounce of 4's over the top of 1 1/4 ounce 9's might make a pretty good brush-buster load.

Whoa! That'll keep the saplings thinned out. Be a good place to put up a deer stand after you clear a shooting lane with it.

Actually, I prefer straight nines in brush...

But seems to me there's a whole heck of a lot that can go wrong before you can sneak up that close to him. I learned years ago that trying to out-see turkeys is a losing strategy in the long run.

Don't get me wrong - I think that getting close is crucial to a high-percentage encounter of the gobbling kind. But I prefer to try to use his eyes against him, instead of trying to out-see him. It kinda goes directly against that if you can see him, and he can see you, when you start calling to him. I want him to come looking for me, and don't want him to be able to see where I'm calling from till he's in range and I have the safety off and the bead on his neck.

Your tactics are indeed way different than mine. I very seldom get to call to a turkey after I've seen him, and if I made it my goal to see him first, I'd see a whole lot of them flying away. And I have found there are a whole lot of things that can go wrong after I have put my eyes on one. I have the battle scars to prove it. smile

Don't take us too seriously, MFK. You are just getting a good aldeer welcome, and most of what's in this thread is just joking with you. The guys that post here in the off-season take turkey hunting pretty seriously. Most of them knock out an AL limit of 5 birds pretty fast in the season, and then go state-hopping to try to kill some more. Some of the posters in this thread regularly kill double-digit numbers each spring. I have learned a lot from them; hang around and you will too. And some of them also make turkey calls. wink

Good luck with all your hunting!

I'm on the edge of my seat! Can you give us a few pointers that you learned from your sensai?

One thing I've learned the hard way over the years is to get down wind of where you expect the gobbler to come from. Don't listen to anyone who tells you that a turkey doesn't use it's nose.

Another thing I've noticed, turkeys have good vision but I think it's overrated.

My final tip today... Keep a set of feet around all year long. Once or twice a day, I'll pick up those feet and practice my spurring and fighting. It's really helped me pull those hard headed gobblers in close. It allows my to judge their trophy quality much better.

I keep a string of 10 gobbler beaks in my vest. I dried them out good and put a couple coats of clear poly on them for looks. I will take them out on a hardheaded bird or on a slow day and rattle them just like you would if you were rattling up a deer. "Rattling Beaks" coming to a store near you spring 2014.

Yep. You can tell when you're fooling with a really old smart turkey. He will try to circle around and come in down wind of you every time Bout the only chance you got is to yelp at him one little lick and then jump up and try to cut him off like a rabbit when he makes a loop.
