I watched the Lance Armstrong news this morning and it really made me think.

I have fished competitively on the IFA Redfish Tour. On the IFA Tour there are rules that would look like they would be somewhat easy to break, but before my partner and I ever entered the first tournament we had the discussion that it was not an option to even test any one of the rules, but we would have to stay well within the rules in order to have no question of our own of did we actually win or rank where we should have. My partner and I had no sponsors and we had to compete with better prepared, better funded and sponsored teams. We were very successful and did very well finishing the year with a few wins and 6th. We are just to Average Joes.

I have heard of people poaching a big buck and mounting it with pride. I have heard of people running into a big buck with a vehicle and claiming it a trophy. I have even heard of people buying mounted bucks and go as far as stealing them. Why?

I personally feel the same way about a buck that I claim as a trophy as I feel about Lance Armstrong's admitting the use of performance enhancing drugs to win. I would not want the trophy if I done what Lance done as it would be a False Trophy as he broke the rules. I look at a buck on my wall the same way...If I didn't take it in sporting fashion and fairly it's just not going to hold a value to me. I don't see how Lance could look at himself as accomplished at all if he actually done what has been reported he admitted to doing, and I would feel the same way if I took a trophy buck in any fashion that was not sporting and fair.

Why would anyone want a trophy buck that was falsely acquired?

I could see buying a big mounted buck to hang in a lodge or nice hunting camp or something for decoration, but would never claim I shot it. Of course I have a few myself , so there wouldnt be a need for me to buy one. I also could see somebody mounting a really big deer that was hit by a car or something... but ever making a claim you hunted it and killed it would just be silly.

Same with people shooting a big buck under a night light in the backyard and getting him mounted. A trophy is earned in an ethical manner not by cheating.

I agree totally. With that said, I have no more interest in Lance's accomplishments than I would if they caught the world's greatest ping pong player juicing, or the fastest cup stacker. He's a freaking bicycle rider.

Nope couldn't do it. I have often thought about this. I know I couldn't do it because I was faced with a difficult decision the other day. I had bought everything I needed to make some smoked sausage and I had been trying to kill a doe for 2 weeks just for that purpose and couldn't see a deer. Well I was fixing to head down to the hunting club so like I do periodically through the season I went to a peice of property I hunt beside my house to check my rifle and make sure my scope was still on. Well I drive my truck onto the field where the shooting range is and right under the tripod I hunt, there are 2 does standing there looking at me. I roll my window down and load my rifle and get the big doe in the crosshairs, I just can't do it. I have never killed an illegal deer and I ain't gonna start now. Well I guess someone was watching because I went to the club and saw 18 deer in three hunts and ended up killing two does the right way. I just wouldn't feel right killing a big buck or any deer illegally and I dang sure couldn't brag about it or display it if I did.

I completely agree with you.

What a Looser. For years he allowed people to celebrate himself and his accomplishments all the while knowing he did not deserve either the praise or accomplishments. Someone would have to be really full of themselves or simply a HUGE Lier to do what he done.

I look at claiming a trophy buck that was taken in an unsportsmanlike manner, illegally or not even killed by the person claiming it as their trophy as much the same.

Sorry to some, but I don't like people shooting deer Out of their back doors on a 2 acre house lot. Always has been a sore subject with me. Just not my idea of hunting at ALL. I know some will disagree.

I could easily open my back door and kill deer just about every day. Have never done it though.

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

I have never killed a deer from a vehicle. However, I've also never interpreted the huntaing laws of AL to say that firing your weapon at a deer from inside a vehicle is against the law, that is, unless it is within 50 yards of a public road or railroad. I have had a discussion on this same topic with a friend and we concluded that firing a weapon at a game animal, from parked vehicle on one's own private property would not violate the law. Maybe we're wrong, be we didn't think so when we were talking about it.
Is the 'shooting range' you mentioned, your personal property?

strict reading of the law says it is illegal to hunt by aid of a motor vehicle. It was enforced that way for dozens of years. About 1986? er so Montgomery decided it was "legal" to shoot from a motor vehicle, a decision made by the Chief of Enforcement, not the legislature or any courts.

I dropped of my first buck at the taxidermist many years ago. I saw a huge buck he was working on, and commented about the size of it.

His response: "Oh, that's ______________'s buck. He ordered them horns in the mail and had me put 'em on a deer he killed." I asked him what kind of deer the guy killed, and he said "Oh, he was a little 3 point or sumthin' like that."

Told me all I needed to know about that guy.

no i do not own the property. i worded my post wrong. i had just drove up on these deer. i did not give them the pass because i thought i would get caught. i gave them the pass because to me it was morally wrong to kill a deer in that fashion. now dont get me wrong i may be the first one to hunt from my truck on a gasline on a rainy day but i am not driving around. i am just sitting there with the truck off for hours at a time and i dont view that being any different than sitting in a shooting house.

When it comes to professional sports of all kinds I would say the majority are using PEDs. It is cheating but I wouldn't say they are on a different playing field when others are doing it too.

Look at the average weight and size of ball players in all sports compared to 20 years ago. When huge money is involved, justification is an easy thing to find.

Unfortunately, in today's hunting culture of "antler inches are everything," many who seek recognition have plenty of reasons to cheat. Look at all the "name" hunters and TV personalities that have been caught cheating and lying about where and how a big buck was shot.

The same goes for anyone who gains notoriety or monetary return by cheating.

As for Armstrong, that's so disappointing. He was doing great things for cancer awareness and research.

But considering the topic of this thread, quit worrying about "trophies" so much and life will be better!

I've never understood people getting so upset over whether someone "deserves" a trophy or not.
