LDW, most of those accidents/incidents with the Ol Man are the ones manufactured in China. The original ones made in Mississippi are good. If you are using the same one from 19 years ago, you are using American made. I still have one as well. With that being said, I only use it when my son is with me. All other times I grab the Treewalker. Much lighter and there is NO tree I won't climb with it! It's the cat's meow!
As mentioned above, the owners of the company are great to work with! You actually talk to them if you call. If I ever buy another it will be a treewalker.
