Simple Green Crystal Industrial Cleaner or food grade mineral oil and baking soda and a little heat.
that would be my suggestion. Simple green. Maybe soaking in dish soap. Maybe even baking soda and vinegar. I would stay away from brake cleaner. Its pretty toxic, especially when heated, it can be fatal. I agree, I don't eat off of the parts that I clean with brake cleaner, but it does well for those parts.
